I don't love "W". But given the choice I was given I feel he was better for the job.

just think it is unapropiate to spend that much money given the situation you guys live in.

It is not government money. It was raised.

I concede that part of those millions will come back to the city, but not nearly as much money as they will be spent.

Agian a common error. More will be spent than the CITY spends.

Of course it is, but it's fun. If the people who went to the inauguration paid for it voluntarily, then it would be very much like the WFFC and no problem whatsoever. The problem is, of course, that taxes pay for the inauguration, which means you and me.

Imagine what the public would say if they found out that THEY paid for the jumps, the beer and the wet T-shirt contest at Rantoul.

>The Balls, the parties, all the rest are paid for by the participants and supporters.

I never claimed otherwise.

The Inauguration is but a small part of the cost. People are getting upset at the amount spent, but only a fraction of that is from Tax payers.

Quote

>and we have been paying for it since it started with Washington.

Nor did I claim anything else. Are you looking for something to argue about?

No, it just seems that you are slamming the event. It seemd if you were trying to tie the entire event as a cost to tax payers when thet is not the fact.

Sorry if I took you wrong.

I agree, if you take the total as "the total people in DC spend on the event."

>People are getting upset at the amount spent, but only a fraction of
>that is from Tax payers.

Then it shouldn't be much effort at all to make 0% of it paid by taxpayers, eh? If the money's already there and all.

From Reuters:

"Security costs aside, the president has said no taxpayer money will be involved in financing the lavish festivities celebrating his second inauguration this week, including a parade, candlelight dinners and nine inaugural balls."

So the president should cover his own security costs too?

hmm, no. Even (and lets make Bill Happy here) Clinton when he was getting a BJ was paid for US tax payers:D:D:D, including the security outside the office at the time!....

I agree. Good example of how a President should act when we're at war.

Yes, it was also his 4TH

Text from his 4th address:
Quote

Mr. Chief Justice, Mr. Vice President, my friends:

You will understand and, I believe, agree with my wish that the form of this inauguration be simple and its words brief.

We Americans of today, together with our allies, are passing through a period of supreme test. It is a test of our courage -of our resolve-of our wisdom-of our essential democracy.

If we meet that test-successfully and honorably-we shall perform a service of historic importance which men and women and children will honor throughout all time.

As I stand here today, having taken the solemn oath of office in the presence of my fellow countrymen-in the presence of our God-I know that it is America's purpose that we shall not fail.

In the days and the years that are to come, we shall work for a just and honorable peace, a durable peace, as today we work and fight for total victory in war.

We can and we will achieve such a peace.

We shall strive for perfection. We shall not achieve it immediately-but we still shall strive. We may make mistakes-but they must never be mistakes which result from faintness of 'heart or abandonment of moral principle.

I remember that my old schoolmaster, Dr. Peabody, said-in days that seemed to us then to be secure and untroubled, "Things in life will not always run smoothly. Sometimes we will be rising toward the heights-then all will seem to reverse itself and start downward. The great fact to remember is that the trend of civilization itself is forever upward; that a line drawn through the middle of the peaks and the valleys of the centuries always has an upward trend."

Our Constitution of 1787 was not a perfect instrument; it is not perfect yet. But it provided a firm base upon which all manner of men, of all races and colors and creeds, could build our solid structure of democracy.

Today, in this year of war, 1945, we have learned lessons-at a fearful cost-and we shall profit by them.

We have learned that we cannot live alone, at peace; that our own well-being is dependent on the well-being of other Nations, far away. We have learned that we must live as men and not as ostriches, nor as dogs in the manger.

We have learned to be citizens of the world, members of the human community.

We have learned the simple truth, as Emerson said, that, "The only way to have a friend is to be one."

We can gain no lasting peace if we approach it with suspicion and mistrust-or with fear. We can gain it only if we proceed with the understanding and the confidence and the courage which flow from conviction.

The Almighty God has blessed our land in many ways. He has given our people stout hearts and strong arms with which to strike mighty blows for freedom and truth. He has given to our country a faith which has become the hope of all peoples in an anguished world.

So we pray to Him now for the vision to see our way clearly to see the way that leads to a better life for ourselves and for all our fellow men-and to the achievement of His will to peace on earth.

It applies today as well.

What cracks me up is that freedoms are highly suspended in DC this afternoon so that the president can talk about how he is going to bring freedom to the rest of the world......

Well the President has to be protected.

All in all its a good thing, maybe a bit to large, but since taxpayers are not paying for it who cares....

Oh right you do since its a chance to bash the US.

You don't see any irony there Ron?

Nope. I see the President needing to be protected and you slamming everything the US does...

Business as usual here.

If I was bashing anything, it was the world that we live in....

I do find it ironic that many freedoms are being suspended so that one person can talk about freedom. If you don't see some irony there......

The levels of security are unprecedented, we are beyond the simple statement of: we have to protect our president.

I couldn't agree more with this. I work in DC and the amount of fencing around is ridiculous. The double fencing in some parts remided me of the double fencing around the old prison near by without the barbed wire (surprisingly). I was thinking of going with a sign that says - these fences sure don't make me feel free - but then I read that letter that the secret service wrote banning all sorts of stuff like animals and sign supports from the inaguration. Would they take my sign support? How is it a security risk? Or did they not want my sign to be seen? Now I was really feeling free... :S

And Ron, one thing that you are forgetting that IS costing the taxpayers money is that every federal employee that works in the district gets today off PAID. Thats a lot of money... I don't know about city employees...

More fitting would be Election Day.

I agree.

But only for Presedental elections or every year?

When was the last NH started MLK? 84?
