mr2mk1g 10 #2 January 12, 2005 No - Putin vetoed the ban on the consumption of beer on the streets requesting that it's terminology is further defined. The UK has a similar ban on the consumption of alcohol in the street. I thought the US also had similar laws in several states? Still, it makes a change from a few years ago when their ecconomy crashed and they were paying everyone with vodka.
IanHarrop 43 #3 January 12, 2005 Wow..... I got scared there for a moment... banning beer... as a Canadian I know that would be just wrong!"Where troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops, that's where you'll find me" Dorothy

ChasingBlueSky 0 #9 January 12, 2005 QuoteThe UK has a similar ban on the consumption of alcohol in the street. I thought the US also had similar laws in several states? I heard Blair calling for an end to the 11pm mandatory closing time for British pubs. Apparently he feels that an earlier closing time causes more fights than if they were allowed to be open later! He feels that those that cause the fights are binge drinking at last call and that wouldn't happen if they had longer hours._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... TomAiello 26 #10 January 12, 2005 QuoteI thought the US also had similar laws in several states? Yes, but it's more common for it to be a local (city or county) ordinance, so it may vary within some states, depending on locality. I used to live in Athens, Georgia, which had an open container law (that's the US shorthand for these things) that included an exemption for University of Georgia home football game days. No drinking on the street in Athens--except on game day, when you're welcome (actually encouraged, almost to the point of required) to do so.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

It's a very well respected theory with wide acceptance. Having been out many many times at British pubs arround 11pm and at night clubs arround 2am I would wholeheartedly agree. My continental girlfriend I was seeing for a while couldn't understand it. They don't even go out till 11... seeing someone drunk at 10pm for her was shocking. tbrown 26 #13 January 13, 2005 QuoteI also heard some rumors that Mr. Putin plans to ban vodka Whether he does or not, it would be the typical heavy handed and ineffective way the Russians try to deal with their social problems. In the final years of the Soviet Union, Gorbachev kept sugar off the market, which pissed off the average Soviet housewife to no end. Some women even confronted him about it and he didn't bat an eyelash telling them that sugar would only fall into the hands of bootleggers. Just think, next thing you know you'll have to line up at the prescription counter to ask for one (single) box of cold remedy containing pseudoephedrine, or whatever the fuck it is, because the meth labbers use it to make crystal. I was recently in a checkout line and the lady in front of me was not able to buy two boxes. She was a perfectly average looking housewife and just wanted two boxes (it was on sale). I mean if she was skinny and picking at scabs on her face, smelled bad and mumbling to herself and trying to buy a gross of the things I might've wondered, but two boxes ?? I nudged her on the shoulder and said "ma'am, I'll buy your second box and give it to you outside". And I did. Either way, neither bootleggers or meth labs are impacted by any of this. Just ordinary people who want to bake cookies, or who have a cold. Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity !
freeflight 0 #14 January 16, 2005 hey, lost time i was in moscow i was freaked out by the amount of people drinking everywhere. streets, parks, buses, elevators. i was hanging out infront of bolshoi, two girls maybe 13-14 came up and set down near by. pulled out 2(one each) 2litter bottles of Bochkarev (beer), finished that in 30 minutes, got up and walked away holding each other up. in the subway i had to explain to two guys drinking vodka out of the bottle, that i'm smiling cous' i'm happy and that i mean no disrespect by refusing to share that vodka with them. that place is wild. they just had a ten day long national holliday, imagine what that was like... JohnMitchell 16 #15 January 16, 2005 *** If it was up to me I'd ban American beer Next time you're in the States, drop by my DZ and I'll buy you a nice, thick, rich Samuel Adams Porter. You might have heard his name before. It's on our Declaration of Independence. I might even have some homemade stout. It'll be just like back home. jakee 1,596 #17 January 18, 2005 QuoteI fixed it for you. The American microbreweries, for the most part, have been turning out some of the best I've ever had. That megabrew comment is meant to address American megabrews as well as the sewage passed off by the Canadian, British, Australian, etc . . . megabreweries. I totally agree with you about megabrew beers. Of course here in the UK the real ale market is still large enough for independant breweries to sell damn good beer nationwide, but none of it is quite as nice as the stuff you might find at a local beer festival. billvon 3,120 #18 January 18, 2005 > I thought the US also had similar laws in several states? Heck, we had an amendment to the constitution outlawing it! But yes, several places ban outdoor alcohol consumption on a town or state level. Some places in the US ban alcohol sales completely.
