AggieDave 6 #1 January 5, 2005 I love chatting about firearms nearly as much as I enjoy shooting. Sort of like skydiving, I like talking about jumping when I can't jump nearly as much as getting to jump.I found a really good deal a few weeks ago for home defense. Mossberg 500 Defender 12ga shotgun. 18" barrel, 29" overall with a pistol grip. Basically its worthless to hunt with, but its a blast to shoot. That and it has a great advantage for home defense...the sound of the first round being cycled with the pump action. Its LOUD and everyone knows that sound. Did I mention its really really fun to shoot? Its loud, it has a healthy kick (not a hard/bad kick, but just enough to know you're shooting a shotgun) and is surprisingly accurate. Then again, it doesn't have to be too accurate past about 10' Sure its not a high end shotgun, but damnit its fun.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." AggieDave 6 #3 January 5, 2005 hehe, it has plenty of purpose. If I'm not around, Morgan now doesn't have to worry about trying to be accurate with a handgun if someone breaks into the house. If she thinks someone is in the house, she sits on the floor by the bathroom in our bedroom, calls 911, cycles the shotgun and holds the barrel towards the door. If someone comes through the door, they shouldn't be there. All she has to do is get the barrel pointed roughly towards the door. Did I mention its fun to shoot?--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

AggieDave 6 #6 January 5, 2005 You know, I've really been wanting to get a squared away AR-15...for no real reason then it'd be fun to shoot and I might go do some competition shooting with it (similar to IPSC/IDPA stuff). After I pay off some more debt I might put one on lay-away.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

Get the aftermarket grips that are fatter if you plan on putting many 00 buck shots through it. If you shoot 00 buck and don't, be prepared to have a sore hand with those skinny-ass worthless stock grips. I bought mine new 14 years ago - shot it hundreds of times - reliable and fun loud and sloppy by now, but the noise would make an intruder wet their pants. AggieDave 6 #11 January 5, 2005 QuoteMe too...but nowhere close for me to shoot it. Can't use it in the little indoor ranges here in the city. That sucks. I've got an indoor range for handgun practice about 5 miles from my house and I've got an outdoor range I can shoot damn near anything I want about 20 miles from my house. So if I can afford the ammo I can shoot as much as I want...damnit I need to get a progressive press.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline." However, the dz is all highway miles and the range is all stop/go suburbia traffic....this is why we tend to rate things on how long it takes to travel instead of how far in Chicago. Good, I have a question for the firearm afficionados in SC. I own an old Mossberg .22 cal military (I think) rifle. It is bolt action, with a seven shot clip. The front sight is what I would consider a normal style sight for most any .22. The rear sight is an aperture sight, which flips open either up, or from the side, I don't remember which, and don't have the weapon in this state, so I can't look. I beleive it is set up for a sling, but has not had one since I inherited it. It is a rather heavy rifle, and has a wooden stock that ends only 3-4 inches short of the end on the barrel. My dad remembers my grandfather having it when he (my dad) was a young kid, which would have been about fifty years ago. It has "Property of U.S. Government" stamped in the barrel, so I've always assumed it was purchsed as surplus. I am trying to figure out exactly what this rifle was used for (generally speaking). I don't remember ever reading about soldiers being issued .22 caliber rifles during WWII, but it seems I have heard of basic trainees firing .22 caliber training rifles as late as the Viet Nam War in BT, so I am inclined to believe it was a training rifle of some sort.
