I got that also through my departments e-mail. It read in big letters THIS IS WHY YOU DO A THOROUGH SEARCH WHEN YOU DETAIN SOMEONE. He could have easily taken out the detective. My video is much clearer also. I like how he got his keys and glasses and left.

Sheriff Gary Penrod said officers failed to adequately search the man, identified by the San Bernardino County Coroner's office as Ricardo Alfonso Cerna, 47, of San Bernardino.

The deputy shot during the traffic stop, Mike Parham, 31, is in critical but stable condition and is expected to recover, officials said.

In an extraordinary move, a 13-minute surveillance-camera video that included footage of the man's suicide was shown by the Sheriff's Department to reporters, the leaders of local Latino groups and officials from the Mexican consulate to quash any questions regarding the department's treatment of Hispanic subjects.

The video shows Cerna pulling a .45-caliber handgun from his pants and firing one shot into his left temple.

"The best way to dispel any rumors was to have the media view this tape," said Undersheriff Bob Peppler.

The video, which sheriff's officials said was unedited, begins with Cerna being brought into an interview room where Sheriff's Sgt. Bobby Dean uncuffed him and had him sit in a chair in front of a table.

Don't know the story behind it but from a medical standpoint, our Surgeon watched it and based on the bodily responses post discharge, it appears to be real as does the fact that there were a few seconds there where he knew what was going on and death wasn't instantaneous. From my own personal experience, it appears to be real.

That does back it up as being real. But on the down side for the cops is that people do survive head shots on a regular basis and for no attempt to be made to see if there is a pulse or to stop the bleeding isn't going to go well for them. They seem to have said. "man that just screwed up my day, more paper work."

Listen to the blood draining on the floor and look at his head, specifically his right eye. There was no need for any first aid.
The funny thing is, I've been in this business for close to 20 years. I had my doubts about how real this was UNTIL I saw the way the detective grabbed his keys and coffee. When I saw that I knew it was real.
Sad but true.
We just watched it as a training aid.

As I said earlier the blood could be a simple special effect, Eyes and body movement are way out of my sphere of understanding, just like most people who would be on a civil jury.

My morbid curiosity got me to watching it. But, from the way I saw it that was real.

First, nothing bleeds like a head wound, and that blood looked pretty accurate.

Next, it certainly wasn't overdone, with splatter and the like.

Also, his body reflexes seemed pretty accurate. Look at his crotch - it appears he was wetting himself. Not a common thing people know about.

This for me makes this all the more incredible, the background is that the guy was arrested near the scene for shooting a cop during a traffic stop and they didn't find the .45 stuffed down his crotch!

Yes,
Somebody is in career threatening trouble. I've had some of my people miss things while searching suspects, even a couple guns. But they were small .22/.25cal stuck in boots and even under the family jewels. These items were found during later searches.
A suspect having a .45, (which is a very large handgun) hidden on their person in HQ is inexcusable. The detective(s) are lucky they aren't dead.
