Well, inside Chicago you can't own a handgun for one, and the CCW was voted down in IL (barely). The bars in IN that I have been to tend to not allow guns inside. Edit - I believe off duty CPD can carry inside any establishment in this city, but I could be wrong._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... markd_nscr986 0 #206 December 23, 2004 ***Personally speaking - I feel safer knowing that some wannabe with a CCW can't bring his gun into a place with booze. Most people I have met that say out loud "I wish I had my gun" tend to have some serious issues and I wouldn't want them going into "hero" mode while I am around or my loved ones are around. Then...were in agreement A CCW in of of itself doesnt mean anything in my book unless you have tactical training to go with it and lots of practice to keep current. The way I remedy that http://www.uspsa.org plus it is quite a bit of fun, tooMarc SCR 6046 SCS 3004
Kennedy 0 #207 December 24, 2004 QuoteThinking yesterday about this whole incident, made me think about a very possible scenario that i don´t think it has been discussed. There was one guy with a CCW very close to the guy doing the shooting. Had he have a gun, he could have drawn the gun, and kill the killer. But don´t you think that in the confussion, it is very likely that someone hears shoots, sees a guy with a weapon drawn and confuse the guy saving the day with the initial shooter and kills him? What about if there is shootings and everybody gets their gun out and start shooting whoever also has a gun drawn? How many innocent people could die in that situation? You have a VERY wide definition of "very real possibility." I was at an outdoors show/convention. Many booths were gun dealers and knife dealers. A few people were carrying open. I'm sure many, many more were carrying concealed. As I was browsing for boots, the tire on a handcart burst and took out a wooden table leg. I'd have never thought anything could sound so much like a gun shot. I crouched and turned, as did many others. I think maybe two men drew pistols, and a few put hands on their pistols. My first thought was an accident, not an attack. Guess what: no one shot anyone, and no one was gunned down in turn. QuoteSorry, no links, but you will agree with me that it is a very real posibility... Honestly that scenario sounds completely ludicrous and beyond the realm of possibility. So no, I don't agree.witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
Kennedy 0 #208 December 24, 2004 QuoteThe shooter was a trained Marine. There is a chance that a civilian with little or no training could have caused more damage. I'm a good shot (and better than some CCWs I know), but I doubt I would be good enough to open fire and only hit the perp in a crowded, panic filled environment. In your proposed scenario, I question my own ability to do so, as well. I don't ever want to have to answer the question with paniced people crossing my line of sight. However, your scenario doesn't match the details of the incident that sparked this thread. The CCW holder was five to ten feet from the shooter with no one else between them. Had I been in theshoes of the CCW holder facing Gale, I don't doubt myself. QuotePersonally speaking - I feel safer knowing that some wannabe with a CCW can't bring his gun into a place with booze. Like Kevin said, what stops him, really? I don't believe in punished things that "may introduce a slightly higher level of danger." I support punishing people for doing something wrong. I don't support secondary laws that try to prevent people from being able to commit the (real) problems. Prior restraint is NOT a good thing, in my book. QuoteMost people I have met that say out loud "I wish I had my gun" tend to have some serious issues and I wouldn't want them going into "hero" mode while I am around or my loved ones are around. I wonder if you'd have said that about Joel Myrick. QuoteNow, I have no problem with an off duty cop with a gun. They have been trained and tend not to go into "hero" mode. Quite a few friends of mine are cops, sheriffs or state troopers and they almost always have a gun on them. Before their training I would never have wanted them out with their gun - I knew how they acted with them. But once they came back from training they acted more mature and responsible with the weapon. If a CCW had to go thru similar training I wouldn't care as much. To paraphrase the bard: "I'm trained by the government, and I'm here to help." Of the many cops I know or have known, there were a choice few who took every opportunity to "go into hero mode." They're the ones that worry me. (don't worry, I'm not one of those nuts that hates every LEO out there. Hell, I plan on being one myself in the not too distant future) witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
