The USAF don't count:P

"The force, made up mainly of reservists and Air National Guard airmen, will return home and could face redeployment in a less cushy location - possibly Iraq, "

That was some good duty. Bet those guy's were very low key and were real sorry to leave.

France? Iraq? France:) IraqB|. The USAF isn't dumb. France it was:)
Good deal while it lastedB|

We helped set things up at Istres back in '94. (509th Air Refueling Squadron) We were flying refueling missions in support of the whole Bosnian thing. We had a great time there, and a wonderful relationship with the French. I know I worked my ass off but still had a good time!

Are you guys still building clubs and golf courses before the air strip?
Do your part for global warming: ban beans and hold all popcorn farts.

Uh - no.

AFTER we got operations set up and flew a ton of missions, and AFTER we got shot at by a few SAMs while flying low track, and AFTER we kept the planes FMC despite poor support from RAF Mildenhal, we set up a makeshift volleyball net in the alley between two buildings. And one of our guys had weights and a weight bench shipped in at his own expense, so we could do some weight lifting while waiting for the order to scramble to refuel NATO aircraft at a moments' notice. Oh yeah, we had the luxury of a grill we built out of 55 gallon drums. Yeah, we had it good. No body here in the states even knew we were supporting NATO forces this way, until now. Conditions were better during Desert Storm. (I was there, too, with the 4404th Composite Wing, (Provisional)).

We were flying out of a French air base. Heard my first sonic boom from up close there, and watched a pilot loop a helicopter, too. Pretty neat place to be. Had some good times with the locals, got drunk watching football (soccer) with the owner of the hotel we were staying in. Ate some outrageously good food.

Just wait to see the impact in Germany when the 1st Armored and the Big Red One are fully out of that country in the next few years. For that will be a slightly more noticable affair.

I estimate at least a dozen towns and cities in Germany will suffer even deeper economic troubles as a result of having two entire Army divisions (or the majority thereof) leave the country.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Just like here in the states under base closure a lot of bases have closed, Like the Air base at Rantoul the town can gtt some some nice facilities that can be adapted for other uses. Like the WFFC, industrial park, golf course, etc

Don't know the condition of the army facilities in Germany:|

The futre of the towns in Germany will depend on their ability to attract new businesses. to use the army real estate. The bar owners and working ladies otoh will have to go where the customers are.

Rantoul was very fortunate and worked hard for what they got. They were trying to attaract a major airline (united I think) to open a maintenance depot there. Even though that fell through, they still did well to preserve the town and help it flourish.

The majority of communities surrounding bases that were "realigned" turned into little more than ghost towns, in spite of rather heroic efforts to avoid that.
