California's Megan's Law Website

Recommended Posts

I'm posting this here in Speaker's Corner because of the subject matter and likelihood of political discussion surrounding it.

For those who aren't from Cali, or dont' know about it, Megan's Law is the law requiring sex offenders to register. California recently released a website with locations and maps. You can see what registered sex offenders live near you.

An interesting and eye opening page, to say the least. I found out there are two living within a mile of me, my wife and son. Of course, since it's new, it is being flooded.

My wife is hotter than your wife.

It'd be more useful if there weren't people in the database who simply committed sodomy back in the bad old days when homosexuality was illegal. Apparently, some people are even in there for things as silly as streaking.

Article here

Not really any evidence or examples to back up the claims in this story, though. I'll see if I can find a better one.

I once saw a test web site run by the police of some big city back east (I think it was Chicago?) that did the same thing for gun owners. You could map out everyone in your neighborhood who owned a firearm. They decided not to launch the project when some hoods who were caught burglarizing a home admitted that they had targeted that house because it showed as having guns (which they wanted to steal). I think I'll do a google search and see if I can find that story floating around. It was really wacky.
