It is very easy to find business ties between Bush and the bin Laden family, as well as between Bush and the Saudi Royal family.

Why is it that people here spout so vehemently anti-europe/anti-USA?

The US has an unfortunate public image problem that means that many people who have not been there absolutely hate the place, and yet when you go to the US and "see" what people are like it is completely different.

I figure the same holds true in most of Europe (I have only been to Germany and Switzerland on mainland europe and there is no widespread animosity towards the USA.

Jeez I figure ppl on speakers corner should get a handicap rating next to their name unless they have been where they are bashing.

Sigh. Well Chris, then I guess you'd better be really damn clear in the distictions you draw. I didn't put words into your mouth, so stop accusing me.
You said Nazis were bad because they were Nationalists, then you called patriots nationalists and ethnocentrists, and you didn't distinguish or clarify beyond that.

Regardless of what you meant, that's what you wrote. If you'd like to amend yourself to be clearer, please do.

In that case, I'm on your side - pander away. It's gone nutty anyway.

Rebecca - nice start, see what happens? How you doing lately?

It's easy to hate things you don't understand and are not connected to. At the extreme, it's easy to say "nuke the motherfuckers!" a lot harder to say "nuke Mina and Ben and Ravi and Ali." When a country is reduced in someone's mind to a player in a political game, it's easy to forget that it is made up of people, people a whole lot like us.

If you guys would have listened to the French anti terrorism task forces warnings, who knows. You may still have a couple more towers standing in NYC...

If you do not understand the difference, might I suggest a Philosophy course?

I wrote exactly what I meant. If I had intended on calling Americans Nazis, I would not have minced words. If you read more into it then that is on you, but please don't claim I said it.

ok - just to chime in
the author of the article is a complete whacko!
the publisher of the newspaper is a rightwing fuckhead.

My apologies for not checking his references. I just thought it was an interesting viewpoint to discuss.

i guess there is no way to check the credibilty/quality/bias of some newspaer/magazie published in another country – apologies taken

or an other example: would you argue over the statement that lets say howard stern represents the opinion of all u.s, citizens? – my guess is: if i posted this i'd get beat up verbally in seconds :S

If he made a statement with any basis in reality concerning the state of affairs here or abroad, chances are, he would be representing a portion of the country's opinions. You can't say anyone represents the opinion of an entire nation, not really. That's why Christel's dismissal of the article as bs and non-German confused me. Is the whole nation really that unified in its viewpoint right now? (I'm asking seriously - last time I was there was '97)

i have no idea if "the whole nation is unified in this viewpoint

yes - "we", the europeans - have problems with radical muslims (so does the rest of the world rather apparently) .
politics in most (european) countries has been week on these nutcases, letting them do their stuff mostly unwatched. after the murders in the netherlands there's a new process of thoight on this.
as far as i understand the issue, there will be no more tolerance on any kind of extremism.
my 2 (euro)cents: everybody is welcome to live in my country as long as they contribute to the community. i am strongly opposed to anybody seeking shelter and then working against the community/country/nation that gave it. AFAIK that is the line of thought starting to spread on a broad scale over here.

This is exactly the sort of response I was looking for - thanks! Do you think security and vigilance has increased across the board since the murders? Do you think that neutrality on the part of non-involved EU countries has made you safer, or more vulnerable (perhaps viewed as weak by extremists?)

so you were shopping for an answer?

:D No! I was looking for a discussion, especially with someone living in Europe who has a first-hand perspective to offer in terms of the attitudes and opinions in your country and neighboring countries.

I just wasn't getting any of those kinds of reponses. Shocking, huh? ;)
