UHHH, you're wrong buddy! That's my father's purpose! ( which is why I am SO scared to have him walk me down the aisle some day!

Seriously though, I guess it doesn't surprise me that I'd get a few jokes, a LOT of people are kind of walking around aimlessly, with no answer.

QuoteYeah, I wanna have lots of fun too, but lately I've realized how much of MY life depends on ME ME ME!
Unless you have children, that's not an entirely bad approach.
You would be amazed how many people out there are "looking out for number one" and who will treat you like a doormat if you let them.
Altruism is only rewarding when dealing with those who are worthy of it.

Reason for my existence? Hell, I'm still figuring that out, and I'm further from an answer now than I was 30 years ago.
Frankly, i'd be a little pissed if someone waited until I died to let me in on this. Well, pissed if I were alive to be.
My wife is hotter than your wife.

You know…I’d like to say I’d like to be remembered for my accomplishments and the things that I’ve acquired. As I get older and realize my mortality more and more, however, I find that all those selfish reasons for feeling self-important are all very trivial and unimportant. The only real accomplishment in life is passing love along to your spouse and children (or others). In the end, that will be all that’s left. You can’t take that Porsche and million dollars with you when you go. I’d sure like to take my new Mirage G-4 with me, though.

Right on, pajarito. Nobody can take ANYTHING with them when they die, and things like trophies, records, etc, SOMEONE will probably always find a way to one up you. The only thing you can really leave behind is what you did to love others and make that love known to them. Everything else will just burn up, deteriorate, or become crap!

QuoteWhat do you believe is the purpose of your life? What are the things that you live for, for example, when people are at your funeral and are saying things about you, what will they say the reason for your existence was?
I don't know yet what my purpose is. And I'm not sure I understand the question, because when I die, even if my purpose is fulfilled, I'd like to be remembered a certain way. I don't know that the two are the same.
I think, sometimes, that I have a gift to give. It sounds arrogant, I suppose, but I also don't believe that this gift is mine to give - but only passes through me to the recipient. It's a loaner gift, I guess you'd say, valuable only in the giving.
Is it then my purpose to give this gift? Or is my purpose something else? Is the purpose defined by what I do (work), or by inherent talent (gift)? If my purpose is something that I do, then I haven't done it yet, I don't think. And if it's a talent, then I haven't used that talent to it's completeness yet. (And honestly, I'm scared to, at times.)
So I really don't know how to answer your question more fully, but if it's what I do, then I want to be remembered for creating the circumstances for others to be happy within (since happiness cannot be created for another person). And if I am to be remembered for my gift, then I want to be remembered for giving that gift freely, wholly, and totally.

By the time I retire I will have helped something like 5,000 young people to become professional engineers and have rewarding careers of their own.
I fell pretty good about that.

In the simplest terms, the purpose is for those left behind to answer the following question: Is the world better off because he was here? I don't care if books are ever written about me, I just want to leave more than I take and have the sum of my life's contributions and liabilities to end up in the black.

QuoteYeah, I wanna have lots of fun too, but lately I've realized how much of MY life depends on ME ME ME! I have lived so much of my life selfishly, I want to learn how to become more selfless, giving, and serving.
I figure there are three stages to life:
1) You're young, growing up and getting educated. Your purpose is to make your parents happy and to work hard at school to prepare yourself for the future.
2) You're a young adult, you get married and have kids. Your purpose in life is to make your wife and children happy, and to see that the kids are raised properly.
3) The kids are grown and on their own, you are making good money at your job, and FINALLY it's time for you to enjoy life for yourself. Live it up!
I'm glad that I am now in stage 3. I've done a good job in the first two stages, and don't feel the least bit guilty now doing things for myself - I've earned it!
Hey JohnRich,
as rare as it is: I fully agree to your words.
Stage 3 is my present life. I enjoy every second after 1 + 2 have been done.
