Ukraine

hehe, that doesn't appear to stop anyone here from shouting about things. I'm starting to wonder if the Yanks have even heard about the issue.

The Ukrainian situation is likely to have just as much of an impact on people here as the inner workings of the UN or how many centrifuges Iran has... those appear to be fantastically popular subjects at the moment... why not the Ukraine?

Hell if the situation deteriorates any further we could find quickly ourselves looking at something which dwarfs those other topics in importance.

Colin Powel thinks it's important enough to comment on.

I've mentioned it a couple times but no one has bitten. I don't really know enough about the situation to comment on it other than to say that seeing that kind of turmoil after an election makes me glad, that even though the election didn't go the way I wanted, we continue to enjoy a peaceful transition of power based upon the will of the people. Even when the election was in dispute in 2000, it was resolved legally and peacefully.

Other countries might have more instances of individual freedom, or a higher quality of life, but the peaceful transition of power I think is what makes the US a successful experiment in democracy.

Every time America steps in to help somewhere, all Europe does is bitch about it. So I'm for staying out of this one. If Europe doesn't like what is happening there, it's their problem - let them do something about it. France and Germany should step up to the plate first. Of course, they didn't seem to be too bothered by the slaughter of Serbs and Bosnians a few years ago either...

Hey, I know what to do: Let's start a food-for-oil program in the Ukraine, and then France and the U.N. will jump in to siphon off profits intended for needy people. That'll get them involved!

I guess, mr2mk1g just was just asking a question ?:D

No, absolutely no need to step in somewhere :o

That case will come to court to be decided. Obviously, this seems to be actual situation in Kiew in order to avoid outrages or in worst case, civil war.

As a "Yank", I am not really getting into it. I don't know too much about it other then there is a huge debate over whether or not the Kremlin backed canidate rigged the election.

Also, Consider this:

Today is one of the YANKS biggest Holidays Most don't have work today, many didn't have it yesterday, and most don't have it tomorrow.

Now, what evidence is there of tampering? I haven't heard of any evidence, just this it is thought to have been rigged.

If you're going to extend interest in the Ukraine beyond the <10% of Americans who have a passport AND use it regularly...:

1. Please supply a map. Ideally one suggesting that The Ukraine is "just east of Texas", or "Part of The Yukon". Remember that interest in Beslan & Georgia only occurred because the average American thought there was a fundamentalist Islamic State just north of Florida.

2. Please supply pictures of Ukrainians. Not those crappy tame ones published so far. What you need is a pic of a Ukrainian in a tank, wearing a towel on his head and shouting "Death to America"

3. Please supply some shocking facts about "Yookrasniova". Not the present "They have no Nukes" crap! Point out that "Youkraisniovina" doesn't need Nuclear Missiles to rain death and destruction on the world. Point out that "Commie Youkraninovnia actually HAS Chernobyl (but spell Chernobyl shorter).

4. Most Important! Please supply a Ukranian Joke! This is to show that "Yukonovnians" have a sense of humour. Hopefully this will save the US the embarrassment of invading Germany by mistake! (dammit Hiram... I said turn RIGHT at Austria!!!).

Hope this helps,

Mike.

Wow. :o (gulp down)
My heartbeat calms down slowly.

Just after reading your very first words, it was like a flash in my head:

Heaven help!
Direction Kiew means: We are just on direct and straight way from West to East, just in case, how might that end for our little mud spot on the world map?? :o My unborne grand children perhaps will be in your dept forever ? :P

Now I will go and dry the sweat on my forehead.

YES!!!!! BWWWWAAAAAAHHHHHHAAAAA :ph34r::D

ok - bak to topic

people are on the streets because they think they have been duped and the results of the election have been tinkered with massively - so far it's just protests and (hardly) violence (according to the news...)

in austria there was some ectensive media (radio) coverage of ukrania prior to the presidential election featuring both sides. looks like the one's in power don't like the idea to let go of the big russian brother or - to be more precise - the big russian brother doesn't like the idea to let a former (and important) part of the ussr orientate itself towards europe at all. there have been stories of massive pressure against the opposition of the current regime before/during and after election. the oppositions candidate claims to have been poisoned (he was treated in an austrian hospital with heavy signs of an unknown disease, the guy is a wreck and definitely looks like he had a real bad time recovering from whatever it was [:/] )

hopefully this will not turn into a civil war and it will be a "quiet" change of the regime :|

i thought of starting a thread - but i was definitely afraid it would get lost between bush vs kerry vs gays vs guns vs whatever

also sometimes its hard to talk/write/post about difficult politic stuff as a non-native speaker (to many idiots in here dealing out if you make mistakes....)

I Almost forgot:

5. Show how the "Yukonaine" threatens US Industry. For example, The city of Kiev (in Goddam Commie John Wayne Hating "Yukran") is the global epicentre of the greatest single threat to the continued expansion of Col. Saunders KFC Business!

Mike.

PS. Christel. Did you get the particular significance of point #4?

That may be the PR front - self interest is certainly the most part.

If that is the guiding principle of the U.S., then why did the U.S. help you (England) in WWII?

I see. Did not know about any closer relation between Kiev and Northern Ireland :$ . Oh man, every day on DZ.com brings just amazing news B|

Don't know any commie with Cowboy John Wayne hating poor Yukrans. But you know, as cowboys travel a lot by horse, from time to time become presidents, all is possible. Even hating Yukrans.

BTW: Do you know if they still own a good soccer / football (German football, I mean) team ? Several yrs ago, I met some of those players in Spain. I think they once were quite famous.

Back to topic:
Putin surely will use all his power to help his candidate into the saddle and keep him there. For the time being, we just can observe.

Bigway,
wait. Pls, be patient. Do not hurry. This is not Pacific overseas, where the Emu runs over the ostriche, killing the kangoroo when falling on Bob Bredl (or so) who is just holding a marsupial in his hands.

At first, Mr. Putin will have an eye on all and if necy, send his troops to clean up. In his own way. He will not appreciate meeting GWB's remaining marines there.

Nevertheless, that situation could become explosive.

I really cant believe you are bringing that up again! But, as you mention it... I am pretty sure it was self interest that was the motive for the US involvment and nothing to do with a desire to help me(who lives in England).
