Recommended Posts

Just announced in a Fox News Alert.

That, in addition to Sec of Energy, Education, AG...

Good. He really pissed me off when he appeared before the UN and lied about WMDs.

Tongue in cheek I'm sure.

I'm very interested in who will succeed him. There's talk about Condoleezza Rice being nominated. I think Deputy Sec'ty of State Richard Armitage would be a good choice.

All the talk abour CR becoming SoS or SoD is driving me crazy... She is smart, sure, but I don't see where she has the experiance to run either of those bureaucracies, either from a managerial perspective, or from the actual meat of the job.

I'm also not sure she has the Diplomatic skills necessary to be SoS.

I don't think she'll be either one personally. She's got the goods to run either department, and doesn't concern me. I think she'll stay with NSC through the President's second term. Then, she'll run for governor in California after Arnold's second term comes to an end (2010). After a term or two there, she will run for President (and I would vote for her) and be the country's first female President. B|

Danforth or Armitage are other names being tossed around, both of whom I think would be better choices... I think Armitage may be a little too close to Powell's thinking for Bush... we'll see what happens, I doubt there will be anyone named immediately.

Curious if any of you supporters of the administration are questioning why so many in major roles are jumping ship.

If and when they come out criticising the president, will you blast them or listen with an open mind?

Out of a cabinet of 15 departments, there are five changes. This is hardly a huge chunk in the grand scheme. It happens with every second term administration. I don't remember how many left for Clinton's second term. Nixon had resignations from his entire cabinet (so he could reappoint those he wanted to stay) and there were a fair amount of changes with Reagan's second term.

no... I think a moderately conservative female will be the first female president. Many conservatives would not vote for a female moderate or liberal, but would vote for a somewhat conservative female over a liberal male. Many liberals would vote for a somewhat conservative female, because they feel it's time for a female president, and would vote for a woman because it would open doors for liberal women later on.

That said, I think we will have an ethnic minority male in office before we have a female of any ethnicity. People are more ready to vote for a minority male, such as Colin Powell, who would've won the 2000 election by a landslide, than they are for any female, liberal or conservative. People are simply more used to seeing males in positions of power, unfortunately.

I'm with you guys. I would have voted for Powell in a heartbeat and actually been happy about that vote instead of going for the lesser of two evils in every damn election. However, the people who truly would be good and ethical in the position tend to not run just because of the quagmire of horsecrap they would be getting themselves into.

From what I have heard, Powell was unhappy with how the war in Iraq was planned, so that is part of his reason for resignation.

Honestly? I'd rather Powell was president than Bush.

Bush's complete sidelining of Powell early in his first term is one of the primary reasons why i refuse to support him...

a President is only as good as his advisors, and only when he actually LISTENS to them....

1/3 is not a huge chunk? Particularly when 2 of them are Atty Gen'l and Sec. of State? Not to mention all the post Iraq pre-election defections from his administration.

No different than Clinton's Cabinet: Cohen, Albright, Lake and Berger (DoD, DoS, and NSC)

I don't know "all the post-Iraq pre-election defections" you mentioned -- or, I should say they don't come to mind. Remind me.

Off the top of my head...

Tenet
Clark
O'Neill
Martinez

Tenet was a Clinton appointee.
Clarke was a Clinton appointee too.
O'Neill was fired, he didn't "jump ship" per se.
Martinez left his post as Sec of HUD to run for the Senate (FL) -- which he won.

Edit to add: Seven cabinet members, plus Chief of Staff resigned from Clinton's administration after his reelection. That's nearly half of the cabinet.

Clarke was originally appointed by Reagan and has served since, was specifically retained by Rice when she took over and was specifically appointed by Bush to an aide position with the NSC.

Also, just remembered Beers, who was also appointed by Reagan, has served every president since, and quit from GWB to go work on the Kerry campaign.

And as far as Tenet being appointed by Clinton, are you suggesting that Bush didn't review his credentials and decide he was the best person for the job? Did he just leave him in that position out of laziness?

I don't know why the President kept Tenet in the CIA. I won't pretend to know why. Continuity was certainly hoped to have some benefit I would think. Honestly I don't know and neither disagreed or agreed with his staying on and reporting to W.

I wasn't badmouthing the appointees by Clinton. People like Clarke prove many things, among them: he's a survivor.
