Schwarzenegger Amendment

Recommended Posts

OK. I voted to amend, BUT NOT FOR ARNIE!!!!!

My argument would be that ANY person who is naturalised as a US citizen, AND has lived in the US for the majority (over 50%) of his life and not less than 18 years, SHOULD be eligible to hold ANY political office in what has bocome his country.

Thus, eligibility for the office of President would no longer be restricted to an accident of birth.

I believe that this is in the spirit of the original Constitution which in the early years of the United States did in fact provide for "Americans by Choice" to become President. This loss of eligibility has only disappeared due to passage of time and I believe that this was not the intentions of the original draftees of the constitution.

So yeah... Amend.

How about "not taxed here" then, if they can't enjoy 100% of the rights?

Hell no. This would set the stage for the mother of all "Sleeper" agents for foreign espionage.

It really does not speak well for California when they send another Actor to Sacramento, and now want to amend the constitution to send another to DC...

Maybe I'll run for president of France, so I can dissolve it and parcel it out to neigboring countries...

It should be noted that not all of California voted for Schwarzenegger to be Governor and it is only a very small handful of people that are pushing for this Amendment at this time.

The good thing about Schwarzenegger is that he brings a certain "focus" to any issue he's for or against. The bad thing is that he's not really any more effective at getting things done than any other politician. He swept into office pretty much on name recognition alone, but hasn't -really- done much of anything to fix the problems of California. Most of the issues he backed in the last election failed miserably.

As for the wording of the Constitution, I do not see any reason at this time to change it for the purposes of allowing non-native born citizens or to lower the age limits for qualifications of the U.S. Presidency.

Should the U.S. Constitution be amended so that Schwarzenegger can run for U.S. President?

http://www.amendforarnold.com/

No, the constitution should not be amended so that the governator can become president. Rather it *should* be amended so that any US Citizen can run for any elected office, including president. Remember that the prez has to be elected. If the majority of americans want some US citizen, any US citizen to be their president, then why shouldn't they have that right? (please no popular/electoral tangents).

You really think some sleeper agent with mixed loyalties would be able to get him/herself elected president?

Goofy - Half the citizens of the country don't pay federal taxes.

Typical rich liberal position. Willing to pay more, but then the rest of the country has to follow their rules, no matter how arbitrary.

Perhaps it would be more fair to say citizenship is qualified by military service to his/her country (a la Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein)

Incidentally, the "Arnie Amendment" probably wouldn't work all that well for Arnie:

For a more relevant poll!:D

and the current results (if you can't be bothered to vote...

As you can clearly see, Pamela Anderson is in a strong position... Perhaps because of her policies on inflation?:P Also, Jim Carrey would be an excellent choice - he casn already impersonate most of the past Presidents anyway.

Still... Let the "election" commence.:D

Should it actually happen, probably will be too late for him, but he would be a very strong candidate after two terms of a Democrat (like in 2000). He can deliver California again, get the GOP stronghold states, and, well, really that's all it takes.

He'd have a much harder time in the primary process, given his 'moral history.' There the fundies would go at him.

He failed badly to out Democrats (0/11, I believe), but he did quite well on the initiatives. As a politician it's too early to say anything more than he is doing better than Davis. Even Davis agrees there.

***the first few presidents were not born here . . .

Wrong. Thanks for playing. Tell him what he wins Bob...:P

Ok, seriously, every elected president has been born in the US, even George Washington. Sounds like you need to spend some time learning some American history.

????????????????????

I was under the impression that when George Washington was born there was no US.....

Wasn't he a founding father? How could he have been born in the US if he helped create it?
