(Car Data Recorders - aka "Black Boxes") "When you are telling someone it is for their own good, then it should be their own choice, they should be able to say ‘no,’" said professor Yale Kamisar of the University of Michigan Law School. "None of these things work out the way they are supposed to. Why should we believe all of these assurances when they haven’t been honored in the past?" Why indeed. All technology is a two-edged sword. But you can bet that hackers will find a way to spoof it or defeat it. I, for example, will be sure to inject data into my federally-mandated recorder that will show Warp-Factor speeds instead of MPH/KPH..., or hack it so that it shows I was obeying the speed limit when in fact I was drag-racing... The only reason flight-data recorders can't be tampered with is because of the limited audience they're used on. Can you see Uncle Sam trying to enforce hundreds of millions? hehehe. mh . kelpdiver 2 #3 November 12, 2004 The feds easily solve that problem by making it a felony to tamper with these devices. Get caught with a gun that has the serials chiseled off and you're in deep shit. Won't be any different here.

If you think that simply making it a felony will help you're living in a dream world. First you have to catch them doing it. jdhill 0 #6 November 12, 2004 I think its fine for commercial vehicles and public transportation, maybe even rental cars... but privately owned and operated vehicles it should be optional... I would not willing have one, and would most likely look for a way to remove or disable it if I bought a car that had one. (Car Data Recorders - aka "Black Boxes") Wow, you guys just keep on giving up personal freedoms. pretty soon you will have to get your black box checked once a year and you will automatically get tickets for speeding.
