Would you plead for your life?

Recommended Posts

I'm reading the lastest hostage story. The have a photo of this woman crying and saying how she's pleading for her life on this video tape. Most likely the damands won't be met and something tragic may happen to her as it has happened in the recent past.

Knowing that your country has a no negotiation policy as far as hostages would you still plead for your life on video?

I'm not sure what I would do. I think I may just plead like everyone else. I can pull the macho ego stuff and say I wouldn't give them the satisfaction but I think with nothing to lose I would be begging.

I've thought about this very thing. Its easy for me to say this, sitting here all safe in the USA, but I think I would just assume they were going to kill me anyway & just try to make my peace with the prospect of death. But I haven't been put to the test so I don't know.

Interesting game theory question.

If you plead for your life, at least you know the video tape will be shown. While this may (or may not) give some temporary comfort to your relatives, it also plays into the hands of the terrorists; guaranteeing them airplay on Aljazeera.

If you don't plead for your life, they'll just kill you. No video. Body and head dumped in the street. They get "some" airplay.

If you do plead for your life, you're just prolonging the inevitable AND playing into their hands by giving them -more- airplay.

Chances are you die either way.

I'd almost be tempted to provoke them and get it over quickly.

If you have nothing to lose...try anything you can to kick their ass, or get out...what are they going to do....shoot you while you are running?

I don't know really, but I never liked the idea of begging, who knows, maybe I would.

If I'm certain that I'm going to die, I'll do whatever in order to piss those mofo off, they'll kill me faster, and deny them the satisfaction of "advertising" their "power"

In this woman's particular case, she actually has a chance to make it out alive. Although the British government will not negociate, I believe that the hostages now need to figure out a way to release her without "losing face". Being a woman, married to an Iraqi (and holds Iraqi citizenship herself), and the fact that she is not associated to either the British Troops or any profit organization actually play in her favor (much like it did with the 2 Italian women kidnapped few weeks ago).
I sure hope I'm right...

I think you all may be forgetting that the French And Italian governments are paying ransoms
The Italians paid $1,000,000 plus some consessions. The french have paid unspecified amounts for hostages
These WEAK SELF CENTRED GOVERNMENTS In my opion just fucking it up for everyone
The British and American governments have a no deal policy that they stick to.
So once again the Europeans (not GB) fuck it up.

Plead for my life on a video, NO WAY In my view it would'nt be fair to my family.

I'd be interested in doing the USAF SERE training which I've heard is very realistic.

I've heard of that, but since you know your instructors won't actually kill you I've always wondered how that particular scenario would be played out versus reality.

For US service members it's a lot different than civillians. We have have a Code of Conduct to follow as well as other guideance that I will not discuss here. There are different SERE programs one can go through, most go through the War time SERE,some go through it and the others. Regardless of which one you attend, there is a fleeting moment in your mind that it isn't real but it is soon gone and you realize that it is indeed very real. Afterwards this makes it easy for the individual to understand how they as an individual deal with those situations when placed in them. Like anything else, having the right tools and knowing how to use them can make life a lot easier.

Oooops. That one is heading straight to SC!
I'm not sure where GB fits in that picture. But REGARDLESS whether a ransom is paid or not, she is a delicate case for the kidnappers, in regards to how they are being perceived by the Arab world. And even though no ransom was paid by the British in the Bigley case, I wouldn't be so sure that the kidnappers were never approached by the UK government regarding some kind of negociation.

If they want me to plead for my life so that I don't get burned to death by a lighter, then that's what I'd do. ***

Burning to death by a lighter would be pretty freaking bad. I always thought burning to death would be one of the most horrible ways to go but by a lighter throws an even more evil twist. How long would it take? Would it be a bic that you have to hold down the button that gets hot until you have to let it go or would it be a zippo. Would it take more than one lighter? Would you have to refill it if it was a zippo?

You'll notice they are kidnapping women. Brave men I see.

Switching tactics - women elicit a much stronger emotional response than men in situations like these...
>:(

Also, I think it was Ivan said he'd piss off his captors to get them kill him quickly - which I seriously doubt would happen. Beheading by knife seems to be the best death the captives get when they cooperate. :(

I like to think I'd definitely cooperate, beg, plead, almost anything for the chance of surviving - dignity schmignity as long as I live. If I knew I was going to die, like others have said, I'd fight if I could, or kill myself if I had the chance.

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

I would bet a dollar to a dime that she is not harmed due to the fact that she is a woman. Having an understanding of their culture, how they percieve woman and past events all point to an safe return. Killing a woman would be a very frowned apon thing in their culture. One can only hope I am right.

Totally agree with you. What's usually tricky though is to secure a form of release where the kidnappers feel they still come accross as the "tough guys". Saving face is a very essential part of arab culture.

Uh . . . unless the women went against some religious rule (like not wearing the burka or something). Then I think they can be killed quite easily. Isn't that one of the many reasons we actually should be against the religious fundamentalist extremists in the middle east?

If I am not mistaken, they behead the hostages so that their souls can not go to heaven. so that in itself is a religious statement.

I dont think I would let them get me to beg. I would try my damndest to escape( or not to get caught at all).

In response to lou diamond:
the code of conduct isnt exactly fair game here Lou. I would try to follow it but they arent using the geneva convention in this war; we are. that is why we are imprisoning our troops who took stupid pictures while we are releasing their "troops" who are violent murders, just so they can rejoin the brothers on the battlefeild>:(>:(

I think Lou was alluding to was their perception of a code. They definitely do not abide by the Geneva convention agreement (nor I believe have they signed the document). The kidnappers at this point do not really give a shit as to how we perceive them, other than being ruthless. But they do care how the arab world does perceive them.

Same here. Call them all kinds of profane things in Arabic to get them really psycho so that they off you before they get a chance to use you that way.

And just maybe, the one who lost his cool and did you in will get it too.

Like others have been saying though, I wouldn't know how I'd react unless I was actually in that situation, but I hope I would be like that Italian who spat in their faces. He was a brave SoB.

Thing is, the TWs (RIFWs) are really brave when they're pointing guns in the faces of unarmed, helpless civilians. They're very different when they are facing highly skilled professional killers who are determined to whack them.
