Skyrad 0 #1 October 22, 2004 Until recently in Scotland a criminal could be 'birched' (flogged) personaly this is something I'd like to see returned to the UK and don't see why it wouldn't be a good idea in the US either. With prisons filling up wouldn't it make good sense for minor public order offences to be able to be flogged as a option to petty custodial sentances? What do you think? When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. Skyrad 0 #4 October 22, 2004 I considered that but then they'd just end up being a burden on our already malused social welfare system. mr2mk1g 10 #5 October 22, 2004 Would be pretty expensive as we'd have to patch em up afterwards on the NHS. What about forced labour? We could have them patching roads, tilling fields by hand, mowing verges with hand powered mowers. Hell we could make em help run a decent public transport system. Any more nonsense and it's off to a prison ship with them.
Skyrad 0 #6 October 22, 2004 No seriously Gordy, flogg the little scrots. Somthing has to be done about all the binge drinking violent responsibilty shirking arseholes. mr2mk1g 10 #11 October 22, 2004 Actually that bit I was serious about. Its a genuine solution to our problem. We don't have the space to build the prisons we need. Purpose built prison ships (static) have been used in the recent past and many are calling for their re-introduction.
nigel99 616 #12 October 22, 2004 I don't see a problem with it for some of the "minor" crimes. I am not sure if they still do it - but when I was younger in Zimbabwe the police were allowed to "cane" offenders for certain minor crimes. The punishment was issued by a judge (number of strikes etc) and from memory it was a fibreglass rod and they laid a salt laden blanket across your bare arse... (my older brother was the recipient due to "teenage" pranks) - no prison problem was solved and no criminal record either. He soon got over the pain and didn't need hospital treatment to patch him up.Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. How about cutting off their hands and other body parts, like in Saudi? Absolutely yes! - the death penalty - which is sort-of the maximal possible intrusion into the physical integrity of a criminal as a punishment - has wide acceptance. It would be sheer hypocracy not to accept the lesser such punishments as well. tigra 0 #22 October 22, 2004 I remember coming home from work to find my brand new (and first ever NEW) car covered with eggs and paint. I think the punks that did that should have been publicly flogged. And I remember the American kid in Thailand who got caught vandalizing public property, (I think that's what he did) and he got caned. Oh the public outcry! But the freakin' brat got what he deserved. I think judges ought to be allowed some creative leeway when it comes to sentencing for the less violent offenses, where putting someone in prison may not be appropriate, and a fine or probation will have little impact. I believe in letting the punishment fit the crime. Like making someone convicted of drunk driving (first offense) work in a burn unit, or clean out bed pans at a rehab center. Or making a slum lord actually live in one of his tenements. Or publicly spanking a punk who vandalized a car! But, it will never happen!
