dropoutdave 0 #26 October 20, 2004 No one ever died for a flag. A flag is a piece of cloth. They might have died for freedom, which is also of course the freedom to burn the fucking flag. ------------------------------------------------------ May Contain Nut traces...... Tell that to the guys who used to carry the flag rather than a rifle into battle. It's not just a piece of cloth. I don't believe it was for them. It is a symbol representing what we're about. Freedom.
FinlanderSisu 0 #29 October 20, 2004 Im failing to see the correlation of logic in youre comparison of a fetus to a flag? A 6 month fetus IS alive just like Flag IS a piece of cloth. Dying for a piece of cloth alone is Ignorant. Dying for the ideals i.e freedom that cloth represent is heroic
DrunkMonkey 0 #30 October 20, 2004 An amendment would be wrong. (& I'm active duty Military...) Coercing respect for a symbol that in and of itself represents freedom from coercion...Ah, sweet irony.. You have your right to burn the flag...I have my right to beat the bejeezus outta you (and make it look like an accident)...

It is NOT justifiable to burn a piece of cloth yet it IS allowable to cause bodily harm to one that has a different viewpoint than yourself? Sounds rather psychopathic to me, does no one see a problem with this rationale? -R You be the king and I'll overthrow your government. --KRS-ONE

rickjump1 0 #33 October 20, 2004 QuoteIm glad there are many intellectual people here and not merely blindly emotional ..... Maybe we don't need an amendment to prevent flag burning, but doing it will achieve the wrong results. The last thing a young widow or a mother receives at a military funeral is the American flag. So far over one thousand have been given to the families of our gallant men and women lost in Iraq. Burning the flag is is nothing short of desecrating the memory of our dead. Do you really think burning the flag is sending a message to our government? I don't think so. We have a generation of politicians who have never served and would never think of their children serving. The importance of the flag to them has diminished. We must remember that every freedom we have today is compliments of the US military past and present. There are others ways to protest without burning the flag.Do your part for global warming: ban beans and hold all popcorn farts. It's not what the flag is that matters, it's what it symbolizes. People burn the flag when they feel that the government has trampled on what the flag stands for. They also do it to get attention. They do it because it gets an emotional reaction from almost everyone. Like I said earlier, there are better and more effective ways to protest, but this one is valid. I don't support their act, but I do support their right to do it.
 rhino 0 #35 October 21, 2004 Quotebut this one is valid. He has the right to burn it, I have the right to respond physically... Granted, I would do jail time... But it would be worth it...
