Michele 1 #1 October 16, 2004 My company is doing a booth this weekend, at a fair. One of the things we're doing is a "Last Chance Voter Registration" event, and I needed to get my hot little hands on some registration forms. No problem, I'll just hit the post offices, and get some there. HAH! I went in to the main post office today - never fun - and took +/- 50 they had on display. I left some in the display thing, and, thinking it wasn't an issue, I started to walk out. I was stopped by an irate USPS worker, who demanded I return the handful I'd gotten. "You can't take those. Those are for people to register to vote. Give them back. NOW," she said, in as loud a voice as I think she could muster without screaming. I looked at her, perplexed. I explained why I wanted them, for the booth this weekend, but that did nothing to calm her down. "You can't take them. You'll do voter fraud with them. Keep two. Give the rest back," she demanded again. Now, I'm just not a happy camper. Challenge me, fine. Don't accuse me of a potential crime, and especially not on Federal property. I bumped it up to the shift manager. And the shift manager apologized for her employee's behavior, and let me take the 50 I had in my hand. She said that they had been told to "protect" the registration forms from "above" because of the stories of voter fraud, and that her employee was just trying to do her job. Fine, do your job, but don't dare accuse me of something like that. I selected the next few post offices with a tad more care, and literally grabbed what I could and walked quickly out. I managed to get 263 in 6 stops, but frankly, that was a few more stops than I wanted to make. And I think we will run out by the end of the day...more than 10,000 people are expected to attend, and we have one of the best spots for our booth... Oh well. Voters will be registered (already got one, from my office) and the forms will be mailed out on the 18th...but it still pissed me off that this is going on. Just thought I'd share... kelpdiver 2 #2 October 16, 2004 If you're going to do a voter drive, there should be better sources of forms. If you took nearly all of their forms, you could be preventing people who went there to register. Your intentions may be good, but I don't see her as a big villain. Michele 1 #5 October 16, 2004 Hi, Kelpie! QuoteIf you took nearly all of their forms, you could be preventing people who went there to register. Your intentions may be good, but I don't see her as a big villain. She didn't say "we don't have enough." And know what? I brought that up in conversation...I asked the supervisor about their supply. They had received a shipment yesterday of 3 boxes of forms. There was no shortage. The most effort they would've had to take was to walk more forms out from the back...and that would've taken far less time than me having a conversation with the supervisor, don't you think? QuoteThe county elections office might have been a better place to go for the forms. They'd probably have as many as youcould take Actually, they were the first place I called. The county election office is in Norwalk, and that's about an hour - not in traffic, one way - from my office. With traffic, it can take upwards of 2 hours each way. They couldn't ship them out and have them at my office by today, and so *they* suggested I go to the local post offices.... I dunno...I think there is a backlash from the voter registration fraud recently reported on... lewmonst 0 #6 October 16, 2004 Michelle, I can't believe you'd try to cheat! You're a bad person!!!jk Hey, seriously, correct me if I'm wrong, but I though you had to be registered 30 days before the election, at least, in CA. So, can CA residents still register? I was going to vote as an absentee from Ohio... peace lewhttp://www.exitshot.com
Michele 1 #7 October 16, 2004 Hey, Lew? Love ya! Actually, yes. The law changed this year to allow the days previous to an election to be 15 days, rather than the former 29 days. When this came up in committee meetings last week, I was sure that it couldn't be done...went on-line to prove my position, and had a nice crow pie at lunch...LOL... As long as the registration form is postmarked by October 18, which is next Monday, you can register and vote here (you're a resident of this state, right? CADL and all that?) Ah, fair enough! I think it would be an effective dirty tricks to do the days before the deadline, though. Hit all the zip codes you think are hostile to your side and keep cleaning em out. The reason that this is important, is because if there is ONE mistake on that form, it is tossed, and the registration is NO GOOD.skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com
