Would you vote to legalize marijuana?

Recommended Posts

I just received this in my email from Rob Kampia

"On September 27, Jonathan Magbie died while serving a 10-day sentence
for marijuana possession in a jail in Washington, D.C.

Magbie, a 27-year-old quadriplegic who used marijuana to treat his
chronic pain, was unable to breathe on his own. The jail, unable to
meet his medical needs, allowed him to die while in custody."

Yes, but I would like it to be treated like alcohol, and tax the ever loving shit out of it.

Same sort of penilities for driving under the influence, same ages, etc. It should cost significantly more then cigerettes as well.

You just figured out why it is illegal. Anyone can grow it. It would be like taxing tomatos someone grows in their garden. If it's a 'vice' and it can't be taxed, it's illegal.

Hi 12 Ga.,
Well dude, the real trick is not to "Legalize" but instead to "De-Criminalize" the good old killer weed!!!! I still have some buttons and stickers from the Calif. Marijuana Init. Prop.19 and everyone is still waiting!! Anybody remember hearing about Harry J. Anslinger ????
Then there was the "SHAZAM" Skydivers from old Elsinore circa the summer of 1968!! Father Goose and Ralph where are you??? No, I wasn't on the load as I was accross the great pond helping Uncle Sugar fight the Indo-Chinese War! Ah the good old daze of the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club.

Just curious, if this issue was on the ballot, would you vote "yes" to legalize marijuana, or would you vote "no"? (this poll is only about marijuana - not any other drugs) I'm also interested in hearing why you would vote one way or the other.

(And assuming that if it was legalized, it would have the same sort of restrictions that alcohol does.)

Yes. Provided:

1. People who use it can not turn around a sue the companies that provided it for health problems. I would hate to legalize it, just to have people sue like they did to the cigarette companies.

2. Like Quade had said that there could be a test to find out if someone was under the influence too much to drive. AND that there were punishments for DWT (Driving While Toking :P).

3. The tax money was spent on drug awareness.

I don't see much problem with weed. The illegal aspect creates more problems than the drug does. However, I don't want a bunch of people later claiming that it ruined them and its someone elses fault.

as a former police officer and detective, and who hada primary patrol job was cocane interdiction this may suprise you .I vote to legalise mj. tax it and sell it.

never worked a motor vehicle accident or domestic violence incident where weed was the cause of intoxication.

MJ is a joke in the war on drugs. Now I do feel we need to do something about the designer drug, cocane, heroin type of drugs as they do kill.

Police and business owners from Mexico's beaches to border cities say they are worried a measure passed by Mexico's Congress that decriminalizes possession of cocaine, heroin and other drugs could attract droves of tourists solely looking to get high.

WTF??? Anyone who goes to MEXICO to use drugs - just because small amounts of these drugs have supposedly been 'decriminalized' - is freakin' crazy! My understanding is that the police and government in Mexico are not exactly fair, and the thought of going to jail there would be a pretty damn big deterrent for me, no matter what the 'law' supposedly says... But maybe that's just me???

Actually, this doesn't surprise me at all. I suspect that anyone with real knowledge on the subject realizes that marijuana is nowhere near as harmful as cocaine, heroin, etc. It is absolutely a joke in the 'war on drugs' and it likely leads people to use more harmful drugs, because they try it and wonder why the hell it is illegal (considering that it is way less 'intoxicating' and harmful than alcohol, the most widely-used legal drug)... And a lot of these people might assume that other illegal drugs must not really be so harmful either...

I hear a lot of people say that we need to draw the line somewhere, as far as making drugs legal... And it seems to me that the line has already been drawn with the legality of alcohol... And I feel fairly certain that marijuana is on the safer side of that line.

It just seems like a huge waste of money to keep fighting a 'war' on such a silly little drug... a drug that doesn't seem to be causing any kind of harm to society, except through its illegal status.

Just like cigarettes, can you legalize it in such a way that children and the rest of us non-addicts don't have to breath it second hand - then no problem. If not, then I'd say no.

Personally, I agree with you. The war on drugs is a joke and so an enlightened, out of the box approach is now required.
From what I read of the Mexican [prposed] law... selling and trafficing will still be illegal (as it should be) and thus now more resource can be used to taget the real villians and not the end users.

also... the bastards selling to kids will have more cops on the arses now.
