TheAnvil 0 #1 October 14, 2004 This actually happened at Eastern Kentucky University this past week. A friend of the family is attending EKU. This kid has a sister who has been in a wheelchair for basically all of her life - and she's a mentally impaired as well. In a classroom at EKU this past week a professor [sic] was just chortling about how funny he found a cartoon of GWB in a wheelchair that had some connotation about him being retarded even if he won. The professor [sic] apparently kept at it for a time. This kid stood up and said that if the professor knew and loved someone in such a state that he might not find the cartoon so funny, and stated that his sister was both in a wheelchair and mentally impaired. What did this professor[sic] do? Apologize, you might think? No. The professor stated he still thought it funny and cracked another joke or two about it. That's a special and most heinous kind of cruel, both by the professor and the jerk-off who drew the cartoon. Makes me sick. If the boy and family don't mind, I'm writing a most scathing letter to the local paper and several EKU officials and alumni about the incident. mr2mk1g 10 #2 October 14, 2004 The sick thing is that when the cartoon is about arguing on the internet everyone thinks it's funny but when it's about Bush half the US thinks it's a disgusting joke and a terrible insult to mentally disabled people. The point is; they're not angry that someone's joking about retards - they're angry someone’s joking about their political head and passing it off as the former. Now that is sick. (Generalizations accepted - I'm sure there are some who genuinely are angry about the stab at the mentally disabled, but overall my point stands). PhreeZone 20 #4 October 14, 2004 This picture has been part of the internet culture for the better part of 4 years currently. I am yet to hear a compaint to be filed against it. http://www.youfunny.com/fp/fp-653.htm I worked with special education childern for a bit so I understand some of arguement about making fun of disabled people. But I find it odd that no one was standing up fighting this picture until someone Photoshopped it.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
Botellines 0 #5 October 14, 2004 Yeah, i do think too this is about politics. However, IMO the teacher should have apologized when comfronted by the student.

TheAnvil 0 #8 October 14, 2004 Synapses aren't firing then. If it's been there I've probably seen it and maybe even commented on it. I still don't like it and think the professor should be fired. lawrocket 3 #9 October 14, 2004 Vinny: I'd suggest that you frame it in a way to go against those lefties - frame the letter in terms of "hate, lack of sensitivity, chauvinism, and the pea-brained white-male attitudes of contempt towards those who are less fortunate." It is a university, after all. Take a look at the faculty handbook - http://www.academicaffairs.eku.edu/handbook/2004-05facultyhandbook.pdf, page IV-20, which states that EKU "does not discriminate on the basis of race, color...disability..." Refer a complaint to the Equal Opportunity office. The student handbook states,"The role and scope of the University Diversity Office is to reach underrepresented populations included under the broad definition of diversity and serves as a resource to the entire campus. The definition of diversity established by the University Diversity Committee states, Eastern Kentucky University promotes a climate that respects and celebrates diversity within its community which includes, but is not limited to, race, ethnicity, religion, socio-economic status, gender, sexual orientation, disabilities, and cultural or national backgrounds, in pursuit of common unity." - page 40. Have fun!! My wife is hotter than your wife.
PhreeZone 20 #10 October 14, 2004 Would you still feel the same way if the professor was joking about that picture with Kerry's face photoshopped on it? What if your friend never spoke up about it if he is pro-Kerry?Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
TheAnvil 0 #11 October 14, 2004 OH, let me see....my cousin is deaf....another severely mentally retarded....my sister's brother in law is mentally retarded...I have friends with disabled/impaired kids...know a few folks in wheelchairs...stood the chance of never walking again myself once........so you might say I'd have a higher than average chance of being perturbed if sKerry's pic was up there. Though the poster itself is wrong, that's not where the cruelty and wrongness of the situation truly lies and the poster in and of itself is not the source of my ire. It is extremely wrong and inappropriate for a professor at any level of the education spectrum to be spouting such rhetoric in a classroom environment. But we conservatives have come to expect such behavior from left-wingers in our nations institutions of higher learning. The cruelty of the situation lies in his continuing to do so when he found out it disturbed one of his students. Apparently the professor's hatred of GWB and his desire to express it to students in order to further his own political philosophy far outweighed his concern for the feelings of others. Truly, truly disgusting on many levels. Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!
