Voting fraud already

Recommended Posts

Requiring ID would help a lot, but is seen by Dems as 'voter intimidation'. This is of course pure bullshit, but because actual intimidation and even poll taxes existed long ago, that is the reaction from Dems. So, while intimidation existed in the past, the reluctance to show ID is an acknowledgement that it will thwart voting fraud that in the whole helps Dem candidates.

I also feel that ID and proof of citizenship should be required to register.

This is an interesting thread.

Our office is going to have a booth at the local Gay Pride Event. One of the ideas proffered and accepted was that we'd do a "last chance" voter registration. And yes, I'm heading that committee (and about 3 other committees, as well...:S).

Our teams are instructed to NOT campaign for anyone. If they are caught promoting one or the other candidate, they will be asked to leave. This was MY insistence, and it was accepted.

I received about 150 forms today. One of the interesting thing it says on the form is to mail it yourself, and not rely on anyone else to do it. We are offering to mail the forms on their behalf, but if they don't want to trust us, then fine - they are actually urged to not do so. I don't care; just register.

So consider this. A straight, republican woman (me) at a Gay Pride Event in Southern California which runs predominately democratic actually making sure that there are rules and we follow them.

Also, just to note...there is a Domestic Partnership Act which will go into effect on January 1, 2005...and we have prepared 2500 handouts about that to get into the gay community....and we think we might run out.

a photo ID like a passport or driving license is very hard to fake. True, it can be done, but the fear to get arrested for using a fake ID plus the dificulty to fake them would keep fraud to a minimum. I don´t think either party could shift the result one way or another if they used ID´s.

I have no idea how anyone would feel that asking for ID at the polls would be intimidation. People need to show ID to get booze or smokes - what is the big deal about proving WHO you are in an election? Honestly, what the hell is the big deal?

We will probably need it here in Chicago (as seen on the news last night):

Board Of Elections Investigates Fraudulent Registrations
Thousands Of Allegedly Fraudulent Forms Examined

CHICAGO -- NBC5 contributor Carol Marin reported Wednesday on an alleged scheme that may have produced several thousand fraudulent voter registrations.

"Any temptation to vote twice?" NBC5 contributor Carol Marin asked Roger Huff, a Chicago voter.

"Absolutely not," Huff replied with a smile.

Huff can smile now, Marin said, but he wasn't smiling when he found out he was the victim of a crime.

A few weeks ago he received a new voter registration card in the mail.

"I've been a registered voter here in Hyde Park for over 20 years at the same address," Huff said.

Huff lives in the 5th ward, but suddenly he found out he was also registered at the Hyde Park Bank building, in the 4th ward, where he keeps his law office.

"I didn't submit this application," he said, referring to the registration form.

But someone, or some group apparently using comuter voter registration forms, signed up Roger Huff and maybe as many as 3,000 others, according to Marin.

Langdon Neal is Chairman of the Chicago Board of Elections.

In August, we began a investigation of these registrations ... to determine if any fraud is involved which could be the subject of law enforcement prosecution," Neal said.

Back in March, the Board of Elections anounced a similar investigation -- that one in the 26th ward, involving as many as 2,000 suspect voter registrations.

Marin said the new scheme was discovered by Board of Election workers who began noticing discrepancies.

"The last four digits of their social security don't match, the age doesn't match, the date of birth doesn't match," Neal said.

In the last 6 months, 240,000 new voters have been added to the rolls in Chicago.

But Langdon Neal said that for some of those new registrations, it all may come down to a few individuals and greed.

"They were paying people to register voters. They put a bounty on a registration, we like to say, and, unfortunately, they elected to take the easy way out and the fraudulent way out and simply went through a phone book and registered people," Neal said.

"In Chicago, has there ever been a year when there wasn't somebody trying to do something to scam the election process?" Marin asked.

"Well, we are living by a reputation, unfortunately that is a few decades old," Neal replied. "If the question is, 'Are we fraud-free here?', no, not yet, we're working on it."

The Board of Elections said once its investigation is complete, it will decide whether or not to turn its findings over to the state's attorney's office. It is a potential Class 3 felony, Marin said.
