wmw999 2,589 #1 October 11, 2004 In the interests of finding something positive during the American silly season, I wanted to start a thread on the Afghani elections last weekend. The election wasn't perfect by any means, or even great. But from what I've read and heard, it was also considerably better than any of the bad-day scenarios, and as good as many good-day scenarios. Little violence, and decent numbers of voters coming out. The Kabul government was able to maintain some sort of order in areas outside of Kabul. Observers have indicated in general it was a pretty well-run election. At least some of the people who were interviewed in Afghanistan were enthused about being able to vote and participate in their own destiny. This doesn't kill the Taliban, but it might just help to weaken it, and turn it into a fringe party. Yes, there is the issue of the wipe-off ink which might have made it easier for some to vote twice, and the opponents of the current president are protesting. That might invalidate the election. But there is enough faith in the process and the oversight that the opponents are using the process. BTW, I heard most of this positive news on that "bastion of left-wing anti-US sentiment", NPR. The election wasn't a complete success, but little is, and it's a step on a pathway toward getting it better next time. TheAnvil 0 #2 October 11, 2004 I think one of the most positive aspects of the election in Afghanistan is the # of women who took part in it. A positive step forward for women's rights over there - and a large step it was indeed. Kudos to all of them for their courage in both registering to vote and voting.
