lawrocket 3 #27 October 14, 2004 QuoteI call greedy when I know I have a sinus infection and need some antibiotic. Can I go get some? no I have to go to a doctor who spends less than 5 minuites and it goes like this. Dr Greed "when seems to be the trouble" Me " I have a sinus infection and need some antibiotic. I have a green yellow discharge and a cough" Dr. Greed "let me check you out, poke, prod, yep that's what it is. Here's your prescription. and lets get you back here for a recheck. me "ok" what has he done for his money? told me what I knew. I never go back for a recheck because, I knew what I had and knew what I needed.... what did it cost? I have a ppo so $20 co-pay but did I really need to go? Dr Greed made 60-80 bucks in 5 mins. let's take the lower amount of $60 for 5 min "work" that's $1200 a hour. Telling a doctor you need some antibiotics is like telling your lawyer you can sue for malpractice. Mind telling me what spectrum you are looking for to treat this sinus infection? Using the correct antibiotics is kinda like getting a car battery - different specs for each one. That doctor is using his knowledge to determine what antibiotic would probably work best for you. Amoxicillin will not be the best option is you have a strep. pneumoniae infection. Doctors know this. Furthmore, why not go ahead and just go to the pet store and purchase some tetracycline or amoxicillin and use it? Finally, attitudes like, "I need antibiotics" cause problems. For example, death. 1 in 7 TB cases are resistant to isoniazid and rifampin, the most commonly use TB drugs. 5 percent of these patients die. Of course, this is why physycians try to use those "narrow spectrum" drugs whenever possible - to curb some of this resistance. Doctors have more on their mind than you think, and they earn every penny. My wife is hotter than your wife.

For fuck's sake, we have a FLORIDA CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT that dictates how we may or may not PEN PIGS!!!!!! bodypilot90 0 #30 October 14, 2004 QuotePeople using antibiotics when they don't need them is one of the biggest problems in infectious diseases today. I have a friend who almost lost her foot to MRSA, due partly to people who "want antibiotics." I have one sinus infection a year, every year since moving to florida for 20 years. I have been told by 4 doctors I would have to "live with it " QuoteYep," he says. "It was $0.25 for turning the screw, $499.75 for knowing which one to turn." I already knew what screw to turn just was not allowed to have the right screwdriver with out helping to pay for his BMW

Dagny 0 #33 October 14, 2004 Quotewith out helping to pay for his BMW You know, I wanted to respond with scathing rhetoric when you called doctors greedy and inferred that the very act of caring for your medical needs isn't the selfless act that it is or can be, but is a selfish attempt to make another payment towards that BMW. But, I won't because I doubt I could change your opinion...and yet, I am saddened by your viewpoint. So, instead, I'll just say that I chose to become a doctor because I enjoy helping people to live healthier, better lives. The most positive trait I have, in my opinion, is my integrity and I struggle daily to maintain it. I am working very hard right now so that when I graduate I can earn a decent living, a comfortable living. But, I would like you to understand that the "perks" don't come without sacrifice. I'm almost 30 years old. I will graduate from school in just over two years with between $200,000 and $250,000 in student loan debt to repay. I have a car that is six years old, but will need to last until the end of my residency. Graduation date, 2007. End of residency, (likely) 2013. My residency years, I'll get to keep up with all my bills on $30-40,000/year. After that, I'll keep paying off student loans (probably for the next 20 years or so). In the meantime, I'd like to have kids. I'd like to get married. My career will make those difficult endeavours at best. I'll need a husband that can deal with a wife who won't be home often and my kids will need a nanny to care for them because I'll only be there half the time. Still, I want to be a doctor because I feel called to this field. It is where I belong. My life isn't easy now and I hear that it doesn't get much better in the coming years, but how do you deny a calling? I just want you to understand that there is a lot of personal sacrifice involved in the career. I want to be an ob/gyn and despite my projected income, I'll have to pay obscene amounts of money for malpractice. Regardless, I belong here and I enjoy helping people. Even the people who think I'm greedy. I believe the income that physicians make is well deserved given the level of education and amount of years of commitment and professional and personal liability they take on in private practice. And also for the personal time they lose. I'm sorry you disagree. You're entitled to that. But, I want you to know that myself and the majority of my classmates are absolutely concerned about providing the best level of care that we can for our patients. It's important to us know and it will be important to us then. Hopefully, when we're practicing we can show our patients what you clearly don't see...that we are empathetic and caring with the patient's best interest at heart.Take me, I am the drug; take me, I am hallucinogenic. -Salvador Dali

No more than you know how to fly a 747 because you can use the Microsoft Flight Simulator to operate its autopilot. Case in point - a woman wanted some antibiotics for her baby. She was coughing. "Bring her in," the doctor said. "Can't you just do it over the phone?" she asked. "She probably just needs some antibiotics." "Bring her in," the doctor said. "But she seems better, I'm sure. . . " "Bring her in." Baby was brought in. She was examined and immediately admitted to a hospital. She had pertussis (whooping cough) and it was far enough along that antibiotics wouldn't have helped. Untreated, pertussis it can cause pneumonia and asphyxiation in some cases. And I'm sure the mother was just as sure as you were that she "just needed some antibiotics." bodypilot90 0 #35 October 15, 2004 first off, I do understand what the price of the "calling". I have a cousin that is a ob-gyn. However I do have a problem when doctors screw up and refuse to want to face the music. I do have a problem when doctors want to limit the income of a attorney because they feel that group make to much. Just as you would feel upset if Kerry makes a single payer health care and they decide ob-gyns should be limited to 100k gross a year. (just a number put in for discussion) btw you could join the military and cut your training costs. I have a 6 year old car. I do not like to have car payments and don't like to put a lot of money in something that goes down in value. QuoteHopefully, when we're practicing we can show our patients what you clearly don't see...that we are empathetic and caring with the patient's best interest at heart. Having said all that I am sure the world will be a better place having Dr Dagny in it
