Political Discrimination Against Teacher?

Recommended Posts

If she's not talking about how she likes George Bush in the classroom, then she shouldn't have to defend her viewpoints either.

They don't belong there any more than her religious ones do, and that's no matter who brings them up.

If she were a devout Pentecostal, it would be OK for her to say that she doesn't talk about religion in the classroom; personal political feelings should be the same.

Um, those local Republican officials need to go back to school themselves and re-learn their math. If, of the 40,000 population, Republicans comprise 5,000 people, then that is a 6 to 1 ratio, not 3 to 2. Doh!

Pot, meet kettle :P

40,000 - 5,000 = 35,000
35,000/5,000 = 7
7 to 1

of course it is likely there is 5000 'registered' Reps and 7500 'registered' Dems. It's not that farfetched that most in the town aren't registered with either party.

From simply reading that article, it appears as if this is the type of question that "arose" from the picture (bolded, my emphasis):

"Parents e-mailed an assistant principal, accusing Pillai-Diaz of suppressing free speech because the teacher refused to talk to students about why the color picture hung in the room.

"Students said, `You like George Bush? He's killed people,' " Pillai-Diaz said. "As a rule, I don't talk about my politics in the classroom."

The picture hung next to posters of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Pillai-Diaz said school officials was told the picture was OK, but that she should address questions that arise because of it."

The student was "accusing" the teacher of liking Bush. That is the wrong tone for a student to take.

The teacher should have responded "George W. Bush is our president, and he deserves to have his picture next to all our previous presidents. Other questions belong in essays or social studies class."

Anyone claiming Kerry should be up there is beyond reason (and possibly beyond help, as well). Until January, Bush has the last picture on the wall. Maybe January '05, maybe January 09, but either way, Kerry is not our president, and so does not belong there any more than Trent Lott belongs there.

A teacher should be exaulted for not preaching political views in the classroom, not expelled from the building.

Schools should practice EDUCATION, not INDOCTRINATION.

I watched her interview on O'reilley last night.

1) It seemed that she was fighting for a cause.(keep your causes to yourself in the classroom)

2) There were no other presidents on the board she kept.

3) This wasn't a government class, or civics, or even history, it was a literature class.

4) She seemed to be WAY to defensive, and I agree that if it is causing a problem and disrupting learning, changes should be made.

5) She was asked to remove it, and she told them no, but they could if they wanted to. (Sounds Combative - again - no place for that in the learning environment.)

I don't know - It's wrong on so many levels, but the school doesn't seem to be to blame.

The school could have backed her up more and supported their own decision to allow personal expression in the class room, but there are limits to everything. It was causing a problem, that problem could have been affecting learning. It needed to be solved. A better solution would have been to install a historical presidential collage with GWB in the middle touted as current POTUS. That should have solved alot. As it went down, there seemed to be a lot of hard headdedness.

The classroom is not where a political bias is ever going to be welcomed by me.

(and you just thought I went down the party line!;);))

Well, this has been a fun thread. I came down fairly solidly on her side based on the information in the original article, and you came down just about as solidly against her based on additional information.

Man, I just love that open ears/open mind stuff :)

If she had spent time talking about Bush, then the same people would have raised the same issue of political bias, because she wasn't also talking about Kerry...

Whats ironic is that the roles (judgements) were reversed from their usual lean.:D
