Cat Stevens, on Watch List, Diverts Plane

By LESLIE MILLER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - A plane bound for Washington from London was diverted to Maine on Tuesday after passenger Yusuf Islam — formerly known as pop singer Cat Stevens (news) — showed up on a U.S. watch list, federal officials said.

United Airlines Flight 919 had already taken off from London en route to Dulles International Airport when the match was made between the passenger and the watch list, said Nico Melendez, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration.

The plane was met by federal agents at Maine's Bangor International Airport around 3 p.m., Melendez said.

Federal officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the individual as Islam.

One official said Islam, 56, was identified by the Advanced Passenger Information System, which requires airlines to send passenger information to U.S. Customs and Border Protection's National Targeting Center. TSA was then contacted and requested that the plane land at the nearest airport, the official said.

"He was interviewed and denied admission to the United States on national security grounds," said Homeland Security spokesman Dennis Murphy. He said the man would be put on the first available flight out of the country Wednesday.

Islam, who was born Stephen Georgiou, took Cat Stevens as a stage name and had a string of hits in the 1960s and '70s, including "Wild World" and "Morning Has Broken." Last year he released two songs, including a re-recording of his '70s hit "Peace Train," to express his opposition to the U.S.-led war in Iraq (news - web sites).

He abandoned his music career in the late 1970s and changed his name after being persuaded by orthodox Muslim teachers that his lifestyle was forbidden by Islamic law. He later became a teacher and an advocate for his religion, founding a Muslim school in London in 1983.

Islam recently condemned the school seizure by militants in Beslan, Russia, earlier this month that left more than 300 dead, nearly half of them children.

In a statement on his Web site, he wrote, "Crimes against innocent bystanders taken hostage in any circumstance have no foundation whatsoever in the life of Islam and the model example of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him."

Agreed, this is a crock of shit >:( I wonder why he is on the dreaded "watch list"?!? I just read what Yahoo news had on this a few minutes ago. I wonder if he's in the graybar hotel till he gets kicked out of the USA.

This TSA/patriot act horseshit is going overboard :S

PS, I'm still voting for Bush tho;)

Damn, those songs take me back... to when I could in good conscience listen to Cat Stevens. Such melodic stuff... The only thing that comes close is some Dan Fogelberg stuff. (Sadly, I read recently that Fogelberg is very ill.)

I don't understand... what fucking good did it do to catch on to "Islam's" presence on the flight once it had crossed the fuckin' Atlantic?! If he was a threat, wouldn't the fact that he was already on the plane matter more than detaining him once it landed?! Talk about closing the barn door after the horse is out!

Why is he prohibited from entering the U.S.? Has he committed a crime? Renounced his citizenship? What's the reason? Not that I miss anyone who would convert to that nutzo religion like he did. I am not fond of Islam, and I look upon its claims of being a "peaceful" religion as bullshit, and rather moot at this point. Besides, even if it were peaceful, I still would condemn its treatment of women. "Cultural differences," my ass -- it's all about power and subjugation for the aggrandizement of the males in the culture. And why? Because males are physically stronger, and can??

Let me just leave you with a more pleasant thought:

"Longer than there've been fishes in the ocean
higher than any bird ever flew
longer than there've been stars up in the heavens
I've been in love with you..."

It was reported (not sure if it was proved) that Cat stevens used his relative wealth earned as a musician, to fund a suicide truck bomb attack against a US marine barracks in lebanon killing many soldiers as they slep in their beds circa 1984. I have no doubt that is why he is on the watch list. Frankly, I'm surprised the authoritys did not apprehend him.

well now they are saying he was carring a bomb......his latest greatest hits cd:P:P:P

Touche. That was good. But seriously, he's on the list because he gave to Muslim charities, some of which have (allegedly) been linked to suicide bombings. I think the no-fly list should be for those who present a security risk. Giving your money away is the same as expressing your first amendment right of freedom of association (and speech); no really a security risk. I'm pretty conservative, but I will agree that Ashcroft is a little over the line.

I disagree... giving money away is not freedom of speech..

If I give money away to a hit man who kills you, I am in deep poo.

Then again if you gave money to any Irish organizations in NY in the 80's/90's you might have been supporting terrorism in Northern Ireland and never knew it.

In some areas the United way helps support Planned Parenthood, who are considered to be terrorists and murders by Pro-life groups. Donate money to them and you are potentially assisting murders.

If I gave money to the KKK then I think it would be safe to assume that I subscribe to their way of thinking? If not then why would I do such a thing? Some one who gives money or assitance to an orginization that is likely to attack our citizens and our country should be viewed as an enemy and at the very least, denied entry into this counrty.
If that policy had been in place before 9-11, would 9-11 have happened? My thought is that yes it still would have happened but on a different date.
I say fuck Cat Stevens. He's lucky that deportation is the worst he suffered.

???

Why is that a response to what I wrote?

But since you wrote it, how do you feel about Americans that gave money to the terrorists in Ireland?

Giving your money away to someone or an organization that you reasonably believe will use it to fund criminal enterprise (including murder and terrorism) is conspiracy, and is punishable.

ASPECTS of McCain-Feingold -- absolutely are violations of the First Amendment. Telling people that they may fund ads, and may run ads, but then saying that there is a deadline after which they may not run those ads, is clearly an infringement on freedom of speech. Telling people what the ads may or not mention, is clearly a an infringement as well.

I can't for my life understand how you can legitimately fail to grasp this. You must be trying really hard not to.

Before making a statement like that? No.
Before actually conducting the beheading, probably. I'm not into executing innocents.

And it took you a lonnnnng time after people began doing it to start in on the sarcasm about my screen name.

"Speed" racer? Why so slow? Maybe you need a new screen name? LOWspeedracer?
:P

I mean really, people, it begins to seem like I'm the only person who must be held to being true to his "name" at all times. Ridiculous.
