billvon 3,131 #1 September 14, 2004 Almost exactly a year ago, Richard Perle said: "A year from now I'd be surprised if there's not some grand square in Baghdad that is named after President Bush." News today from Reuters: "At least 35 people have been killed in a huge blast in a crowded Baghdad market place close to an Iraqi police station. . . A huge crater had been punched into the road and at least nine cars were destroyed, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky. Ambulances with sirens wailing ferried the dead and wounded to hospital." Well, perhaps they can name the crater after him.

billvon 3,131 #5 September 14, 2004 >By God, your posts get so smarmy and petulant! Do you ever let up? I'm posting as a counterpoint to the conservative bedtime stories about a peaceful, liberated, grateful Iraq, one where no one is ever tortured or killed and no one has to walk the streets in fear, one where we completely rebuilt the country after years of brutal abuse by a thug. There are people out there who actually believe that. Oh, BTW, two other stories today: (AP) Kirkuk, Iraq - Saboteurs today blew up a junction where multiple oil pipelines cross the Tigris River in northern Iraq, setting off a chain reaction in power generation systems that left the entire country without power, officials said. HOLLAND, Mich. (Reuters) - Faced with mounting violence in Iraq, the Bush administration plans on Tuesday to propose shifting $3.46 billion from Iraqi water, power and other reconstruction projects to improve security, boost oil output and prepare for elections scheduled for January. And you thought you had power problems . . . of course, over there they actually _do_ fry US contractors working on the power grid.
