kelpdiver 2 #26 September 9, 2004 Quote My idea... get rid of SS. Pay what is currently owed right now even though that means more debt. Get rid of the Dept overseeing SS (or the portion of the dept) take that part of the budg and use it pay that debt.... The US doesn't have that kind of money. We're talking trillions of dollars. I'd guess at least 5 years of 100% spending. And you still have Medicare to contend with. If you meant both, we REALLY don't have that kind of money. I'm only 32 and already I've got enough credits for the money I've dumped into the pit.
PhillyKev 0 #27 September 10, 2004 QuoteDon't be silly Kallend we all know why..... A little thing called a war!!! No offense, but that's just a big old crock of shit. Even if you don't include military expenditures OR homeland security, Bush still increased spending in 3 years way more than Clinton did in 8.

PhillyKev 0 #29 September 10, 2004 If you're going to call me a liar, go ahead and do it. Don't beat around the bush. Might want to get your facts checked first, though. FCompiled from the White House's web site. http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/fy2005/sheets/hist08z7.xls See the following chart. Blue is Clinton's increases in discretionary spending. Red is Bush. PhillyKev 0 #31 September 10, 2004 Sure...ok. What were you disputing then. You replied to me. So you were either calling me a liar for paraphrasing a WSJ article, or you were calling me a liar for my statement about the budget which is confirmed by the White House's figures. So instead of your usual "you're wrong and I'm right" why don't you tell me what you're talking about and try having an actual discussion.
kallend 2,174 #32 September 10, 2004 QuoteFunny, you say Bush doesn't create jobs yet you say there are 1.1 million more people employed by the gov....interesting. Maybe we should let that sink in a bit. You do realize what you just wrote. Bwahahaha... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one. Perhaps Kallend can elaborate, but I suspect that 1.1 million more people aren't working. Rather they were working for someone else before and became federalized, like the TSA employees. His words were 1.1mil more working for the government. Or a reference to the reserves who were called to duty.
billvon 3,131 #35 September 10, 2004 > Nowadays JFK would have been a republican. His views and personal > dedication to the country are the exact opposite of what the democrats > stand for now. You have got to be kidding me! To use the language of conservatives, he was "a tax and spend liberal from Taxachusetts." He kicked off the National Endowment for the Arts, a favorite target of conservative talking heads who give examples of what's wrong with the US. He supported GATT, an early world trade organization. If Kennedy were to run today: Conservatives would trot out people who claimed that the boat he commanded during World War II, the PT-109, was sunk due to his incompetence, and the man he saved by towing him to an island was a pathetic, transparent ploy to get a medal. They would question whether he deserved a purple heart (he hurt his BACK and they gave him a frigging purple heart?) and would then call him a coward for leaving the service just because he had malaria. Right wingers would ask "what part of INCOMPETENT COMMANDER don't you understand? And I have a bad back; should I get a medal for being a war hero?" Conservatives would call his wife a whore; after all, she had been engaged to someone else before she married JFK. And she was clearly trying to destroy the morals of america's youth by wearing short dresses. There was even a nude picture of her taken by paparazzi, the shameless whore! Conservatives would call him an egghead for winning a Pulitzer Prize, and suggest he "not quit his day job" - although others would publically hope he just went back to writing fiction. "Michael Moore has nothing on Profiles in Courage! Fiction from the front cover to the back cover. Why isn't it in the fiction section in the library? I have proof here that on page 17, he called his boat gray, when it was shown in official US documents to be dark gray!" Right wingers would claim that his belief in the space program was absurd; didn't everyone know that rockets can't work in space if they don't have air to push against? And they would warn people that he would tax the country dry to pursue his (literally) lunatic dreams. They would question his religion. "Do we really need a president who takes orders from the Pope? What if the Pope tells him to stop fighting enemies; would he disarm America and allow our enemies in? He's either a false catholic or a blind follower of the pope; which is it? Can't answer that question, huh?" He may have been the greatest president this country ever had, but the republicans would still try to cut him to ribbons if he were to run today. They don't know how to do much else any more.

tunaplanet 0 #42 September 10, 2004 It won best documentary, I believe. It's a series of recent and old interviews with McNamara about WWII and Vietnam. Forty-two
tunaplanet 0 #43 September 11, 2004 Here's the trailer for it. It did win best documentary last year. I just checked. The man who did it was Errol Morris. He also did, "The Thin Blue Line" which is one of my favorites. That one is a bit older but still fantastic. It's about a man who was wrongly arrested and sent to prison for killing a Texas State Trooper (or some law enforcement officer). Forty-two
