Yeah, no shit.

I stumbled through the first few paragraphs, and immediately thought what you said, but I couldn't make it much further. What I did read of that story was riddled with information that ranges from bad to total, unadulterated bullshit.

This "article" reads like an assault-piece on anything and anyone pro-gun. There is not even the PRETENSE of objectivity, or even truth, in this thing. To you anti-gunners out there, how do you justify that this is the only way your side can get people to support your ideology? Lies and misinformation and mischaracterization...and appeals to hysterical emotion (or else why try to hold a meeting at a memorial to slain officers?)

From the article:
Quote

The politically powerful National Rifle Association gun lobby has made killing the ban a top priority, and some lawmakers are fearful of crossing the NRA weeks before congressional elections.

Clear indictment of the NRA as though it is some huge overlord threatening all elected officials who stand in its way, when really all it is is another civil rights organization fighting legally for what it feels is right.

Quote

The Consumer Federation of America released a report this week, based in part on manufacturer catalogs and Web sites, that concluded that "assault weapons will be more lethal and less expensive... Prices will drop as supply dramatically increases."

"More lethal"?! Because they guns will now have flash suppressors, bayonet mounts, and fifteen instead of ten-round magazines? They're still gonna be guns that fire bullets. "More lethal" is a preposterous claim since we're already talking about guns.

Also, the claim ignores the fact (in fact, the BAN ignores the fact) that these guns have remained legal to purchase and sell and own -- they were just more expensive because you had to buy pre-existing supply. No one was ever truly kept from getting a so-called "assault weapon."

Quote

Under the 10-year ban enacted in 1994, weapons such as AK-47s, TEC-9s, and Uzis were outlawed, as were high capacity ammunition magazines holding more than 10 rounds. That law expires next Monday and Congress does not plan to extend it.

The Senate did vote earlier this year to renew the ban but that measure was part of a larger gun bill that was defeated at the NRA's behest. The House leaders have not allowed a vote on the ban this year.

The senate voted earlier this year on an UNRELATED BILL to which this bullshit extension was TACKED ON DELIBERATELY TO KILL THE BILL. When the opposition to the original bill poisoned it so that its supporters didn't want it, the supporters scuttled it, and rightly so.

"Defeated at the NRA's behest"? I guess every gun control law that congress approves because they claim to believe in it is really just "passed at HCI's behest."

Quote

Even groups that back renewing the law acknowledge the gun industry found loopholes and that dangerous weapons do remain on U.S. streets. But they argue that without the ban, the problem will grow worse.

This is the biggest line of bullshit in the whole article (apart from the "streets being flooded"): how is complying with everything the law mandates "finding loopholes"??

What are they going to do and say when "the problem" does not grow worse when the law expires?

I know. They'll be going after "sniper rifles" next. :S

And since a "sniper rifle" is merely an accurized hunting rifle, bedded in a synthetic stock, that makes about as much sense as the original non-"assault weapons" ban. Not that you could tell them that.

here's something I found funny, which should be a fine indicator the writer doesn't know her liberal, ignorant ass from a hole in the wall:

when in reality:
Quote

In 1989, the "sporting purposes" provision led ATF to ban the importation of several semiautomatic versions of assault weapons possessing military features such as bayonet mounts, pistol grips, night sights and grenade launchers. After the 1989 prohibition, certain semiautomatic assault rifles that had failed the sporting purposes test were modified to remove all military features except the ability to accept a large capacity military magazine (LCMM) that holds more than 10 rounds. The LCMM rifles are models based on AK-47, FN-FAL, HK 91 and 93, Uzi and SIG SG550 military assault rifles.

(that's not to say that since this ruling was passed, manufacture and sale of the above firearms--using at least (edit) 10US parts--hasn't multiplied exponentially over the 1989 sales figures. Yet, CRIME RATES INVOLVING THESE FIREARMS CONTINUES TO DROP!!! OH THE HORROR!)

They may be female, they're probably human, but they're definitely not women. (don't even get em started on "ladies")

What's scary is that they seem to think that they are the normal ones, and that everybody else is just weird.

I live in Alabama at the moment, and even in the heart of dixie I get funny looks for perusing Guns & Ammo or Primitve Archer on my lunch break. It's really funny when someone calls you a fascist after they quit, then you tell them about people far to the right of you. Then ask them if they can think of anyone at all farther to the left than they are. Just sit back and watch them fluster. B|

Frappaccino? No man, I'm going to use coffee. That shit BURNS.

Well at B&N you probably stick out like a cockroach on white carpet.

Don't sweat it. Me and Jimbo will give you a buzz on your c-phone before we invade with our bayonets. Duck behind the "Intelligent Liberals of Our Time" aisle. It's usually desolate of people since there's no books there yet. Should be a good place to chill.

the ban is moronic.

I can't wait to see it expire!

instead of banning guns, I wish more people would educate themselves about them. Then people might stop thinking of them as dangerous magic sticks that go bang and hurt people and must be banned for fear they might jump out of their lockboxes, turn off their own safeties, cock themselves, and start shooting the place up.

Everyone I've ever met who wants to ban guns is afraid of them because they don't understand them.

Personally, I'm shopping around right now...seriously considering this one.

I'm going there now. Is that the Glock 19? I recommend the 23 if you're going that way. Might as well get the power of.40 cal if you are able to fire it comfortably. It's not a lot more punishing than 9mm.

Ammo is significantly more expensive, though, and the power difference isn't a huge concern. Unfortunately, being in CA means that the higher magazine capacity for the 9s is not relevent, unless you can round one up that doesn't indicate being manufactered after 2000.

I find all the glocks a bit punishing for my hands. It's a Sig/H&K household here.

I love my Glock 26 with the lasermax sight. You gotta have that for any Glock. The 26/27 models or "baby glocks" make good concealed carry guns.

http://www.lasersightsusa.com/products/index.html

My wife gave it to me for Valentines Day, cool huh?

Did they finally make the Lasermax guide-rod laser sight for the 27? How accurate are they? I mean, I never made the connection that one should expect the axis of the guide rod to be perfectly parallel to, or have a consistent point-of-aim/point-of-impact with the barrel.

I also could never see spending nearly as much on the laser guide rod as I had on the gun! What are the prices down to, nowadays?

I think my wife bought mine at a gun dealer and paid 350 but I have seen them on gunbroker.com and ebay for 280 or so. They are so cool, because you don't need a slide rail and no special holsters, because everything is internal. The batteries last for a couple of years and are only 10 bucks. The point of Impact is accurate to within +/- 3 inches. I wouldn't want to rely on it, but it makes a great deterent to the use of deadly force, something that even the most liberal ones on here should appreciate. One testimonial of a cop that has one says that he was on patrol when they got a call about a deranged man with a shotgun on his porch. After the cops arrived a couple of shots were fired back and forth without anyone hitting their mark and then the cop remembered that he had just installed his lasermax. He turned it on and put the red dot on the guys chest. He said that the man looked down and saw it and immediately laid down his weapon. Living in Texas, where they value the right of home defense VERY seriously, I still would rather light someone up, than send them to hell. Especially since you are very likely to be sued in a civil court by the family of the deceased even if you broke no laws. Like my concealed carry course instructor says, No possession is worth someones life. Before you freak out and think that I'm some liberal/tree hugging/bleeding heart pinko, let me emphatically say that I would not hesitate if I thought my family or anyone else's life was in danger.

I forgot to add that I have experienced greater accuracy than that, but I think that they just claim 3" so you won't return it. (The sight is preset and there in no adjustment) Mine usually hits within an inch or so of where the dot is. Its also great in low light conditions and since it pulsates and is not steady, you can even see it in direct sunlight.

I don't know much about guns, but they interviewed a big independent gun dealer on the radio today. He initially supported the assault weapons ban, and actually incinerated a bunch of assault weapons on camera just to make a point (when the law was first passed).

But a few years went by, and, according to him, there were just so many loopholes that you could still actually sell assault weapons, and he was losing business to everyone else, so he just started selling them again.:P He said economically, he had no choice. It was sell them or go out of business.

I don't know jack about guns or the specific wording of the "assault weapons ban" but it seems as though it was just one of those bullshit, feel-good laws that politicians throw out there just so they can say they're doing something.

They want to "send a message" rather than do anything that would actually cut down violent crime in the real world.

I heard a brief shpeil by one guy who was trying to say that Columbine demonstrates why we need to renew this ban. The blatantly obvious thing to me is: The frickin' ban WAS in place when Columbine happened, and it didn't stop it!!:o:S

I don't own guns, & so I don't really give a crap, but I'm not for passing a lot of bullshit laws that don't actually protect anyone, just so that some politicians can "send a message".

shit, I've noticed that I post in Speakers Corner a lot more when I've had a few drinks. That's probably not a good sign.

The way to keep crap like this from happening is to lock these idiots who do these crimes with guns or anything else away and never let them out. No matter how hard the tree huggers whine. Then maybe they would think twice before picking one up for no good reason. This would work the same way that the concealed carry programs did in over 38 states, to reduce violent crime, because the criminals now have a pretty good chance of picking the wrong guy who is packing.

yeah I think that's about right. We had a lot of violent street crime in the late 80s and early 90s. I got mugged twice during that time period. The first time (happened in '89) I wound up needing plastic surgery & a new tooth after those fuckheads got through with me.>:(

Then they got tough on crime & locked people up. No more of this revolving door penal system.

Some people whined about how so many Americans were in jail. But guess what!:o Crime went down!! Certain areas in the city became, well, walkable again! gosh, who woulda guessed it.

Oh, yes, I love it when people complain about the number of people in jail, like it's a bad thing. Um, people, if these folks hadn't DONE STUFF that got them put in jail, they'd be as free as you or me! Would you rather that people who committed crimes were NOT put in jail? I say, whatever number of people commits crimes, that's the number that belongs in jail! If it's high, it's high! :S Tell the population to stop being criminals, and it will go down!

So the Assault Weapon ban is gone, and the prison population is too high.

Maybe the solution would be to put all the criminals in jail... But give them guns!!?

That way everyone's happy, right?

The law abiding citizens are happy - They can walk the streets.B|

The Criminals are happy - they get to keep their guns.B|

The Air Force is happy - they get to practise accuracy dropping food into prison compounds.B|

Prison Guards are happy - their duties are largely confined to scoring the air force's accuracy.B|

The Bleeding Hearts and liberals are happy - The prison population hits an all time low.B|

DA's and State Governors are happy - there's now loads more prisoners they can execute.B|

Yeah... Thinking about it... "GUNS FOR INMATES" is the way forward for penal systems all over the world! - And it was invented here!!!B|B|:S:SB|B|:P

Police officials from across the country on Wednesday warned that dangerous assault weapons will flood U.S. streets if the ban on those guns expires next week

The same old discredited anti-gun tactic: spread fear with predictions of blood in the streets.

Of course, such predictions never come true, but that doesn't matter.

Note: the rank and file police officers oppose this ban by a vast majority. It's only the top cops, who are more politicians than police officers, who speak out in favor of gun control laws. So of course, those are the ones the newspapers quote.

Yeah... I estimate that a single F-15E "armed" with Cbu 97s (see pic) should be able to deliver over 2000 nutritious sub sandwiches (see pic) in a single 500 knot passB|.

Of course, The British Army's experience of the US Air Force tends to suggest that MOST of the delivered items will in fact land on the prison guards - in what will become known as a "Friendly Food incident (see pic):S.

So the inmates will be left to kill each other to fight over the occasional sarnie that does in fact land where they can eat it!!

Remove the jailing for petty drug offenses (like possession of pot, or buying acid at a Deadhead concert) and it's reasonable enough. These offenders make up a pretty decent chunk of that record population and I don't think we're much safer as a consequence. Less so when jail times are reduced for the burglars and muggers because of overcrowding.
