78RATS 0 #1 August 25, 2004 SUN TZU SAID: When one employs battle - If victory takes long, it blunts the military and grinds down its sharpness. Attacking walled cities, one's strength is diminished. If soldiers are long in the field, the state's resources are insufficient. Now if one blunts the military, grinds down its sharpness, Diminishes its strength and exhaust its goods, Then the fuedal lords ride to one's distress and rise up. Even one who is wise cannot make good the aftermath! Thus in the military one has heard of foolish speed but has not observed skillful prolonging. And there has never been a military prolonging that has brought advantage to the state. peacefuljeffrey 0 #2 August 25, 2004 So, what you're saying is, you're bugged at Clinton for getting us into Bosnia with no plan for how we're gonna get out. mr2mk1g 10 #6 August 26, 2004 I named my cat Sun Tzu. He truly is a worthy read for anyone but not exactly for the faint hearted. He's still required reading for Chinese Army Officers. Clausewitz On War is good too – he’s just less of a philosopher and a little more practical.

This is true, I read Art of War freshman year at the AFA in my Military Strategic Studies class. I'm almost positive it's required at Annapolis too. Douva 0 #14 August 26, 2004 The quote that always comes to mind for me isn't quite as sophisticated as Sun Tzu. It's one of Kevin Costner's lines from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves: "And one free man defending his home is more powerful then ten hired soldiers. The Crusades taught me that." You can argue that most of the fighting in Iraq is by insurgents who aren't really defending their "home," but in their minds their home is Muslim ground, and that is what they're defending. For other examples of this principle, see the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Vietnam, and the American Revolution. I'm not arguing for an immediate withdrawl of troops; I am simply pointing out that this scenario has not worked out favorably for invading forces in the past.I don't have an M.D. or a law degree. I have bachelor's in kicking ass and taking names.
