CHICAGO (Reuters) - Republican U.S. Rep. John Hostettler pleaded guilty and agreed to a suspended 60-day jail sentence on Tuesday for having a loaded handgun in his luggage at the Louisville, Kentucky, airport.

An avid hunter and gun rights advocate, the Indiana conservative congressman did not attend the plea bargain conference with a Jefferson County prosecutor, but contended at the time that he had forgotten about the weapon in his carry-on bag as he went to catch an April 20 flight back to Washington.

Under the terms of the plea agreement, Hostettler will not have to serve the sentence unless he commits another crime within two years.

His Glock pistol was confiscated, and his permit to carry a gun will not apply in Kentucky during the two-year period. He also cannot purchase a gun outside of his home state of Indiana or Washington, D.C., during the period, a spokesman for the court said.

A not of interest - for those of us not among the titled nobility (senator, representative, secretary, etc), attempting to carry a firearm past airport security is a federal felony.

Hell, I'd take a felony conviction if I deserved it, so long as I kept all my other rights. This guiy didn't suffer anything. Most of us would be barred from voting or owning firearms ever again.
