bands that I will be boycotting

You set up a nice double standard, there, Kev. What's wrong with feeling different and at-odds with the opionions of others. Just because they HAVE opinions does not mean that I have to RESPECT those opinions, or even the people who hold them. This is not the same as trying to suggest they don't have a RIGHT to their opionions: they do. But there is no truth to the bizarre notion that all opinions, no matter how ill-conceived and how frivolous, must be given equal respect.

Man....I want to meet you some day and see if you're how I picture you. Wired to the gills on red bull and bouncing off the walls. ;)

I never said any of what you are attributing to me. Feel free to not respect whatever opinions you want. But if you do so without listening to their reason for that opinion, and ignore the opportunity to learn something about their opinion, even if you don't agree with it, well, that's the definintion of closed minded. Feel free to be that too.

Your entire tirade is based off the premise in your first sentence "Oh, I see, so we should all respect all opinions," which is something I never said or implied.

But I am sure that I will not be buying any of their music because I have no desire to support somebody that is against me.

Steel, then you'd better turn away from just about every Hollywood movie ever made.

The Ten Commandments might be safe -- but no, there were probably lots of liberals with various parts in the movie and other roles on the set.

So if you like being entertained, it would be wise to put the political views of people in the arts aside; otherwise your choices are few and far between.

Also, you better add the following bands to your list; they just came out with a "Rock against Bush" compilation:

Offspring
Ministry
Descendents
Social Distortion
RX Bandits
Pennywise

Pfft! Gee, I'm really gonna miss those bands!
:S

I'm pretty low-key in person. I have a sense of humor in person. I'm relaxed and actually pretty "peaceful" in person. I have never had a Red Bull in my life, and I limit my caffeine intake to one can of Pepsi a day (though more for limiting the empty calories than anything else).

Maybe I come across as high-tension here because this IS where I vent my tension, and it's easy to do because it's just me and the screen -- I don't have to scream over other people or even be embarrassed to say something provocative. Plus, I probably come across as real verbose because with my typing speed, it's easy for me to cram a lot of words down onto the screen with very little effort. (In fact, it's fun for me to type.)

Come on down to S. Florida and jump with me at Sebastian. You'll love the view, and we'll have a good time.

Blue skies,

I figure, that's why I made the comment. No offense meant. It's just fun to put a real life personality with pretty much anonymous people and see how far off you were B|

Personally, I'm exactly like I'm sure I'm pictured. Weekly flag burning ceremonies and eating dead fetuses to steal their stem cells >:(

I would much prefer we take the people who fight against freedom of speech and deport them to China.

Well, Turtle stole my comment on Kerry, but does that mean we can deport all the gun grabers to 1930s Germany, or 1970s Cambodia, or...

you really really want to reevaluate your record collection then... I think you'd be very very surprised if you found out the political leanings of the musicians who created all that music... the reason the public is largely unaware of a particular artist’s political thought is because the musicians generally realize it has nothing to do with the relationship between them and their fans..

did you ever start listening to band because you heard about their political affiliations? why would you stop listening to one for the same reason? Unless they are overtly beating you with the pipe of social commentary, what does an artists political views have to do with the arrangements of rhythm and tone they create?

still seems silly to me.....

Um, no I'm perfectly aware that speech falls under the first and arms fall under the second. I was simply applying the same standard to one amendment as to another.

Yeah, I know, liberals and the ACLU have problems with that concept, but that doesn't mean I don't know one from the other.

connection to Moveon.org

Well, at least you are doing a good job of promoting their website for them. I had never heard of it, but (thanks to you) I have now visited the website, bought a ticket to one of the shows, and sent them a donation. :P

(Ok, well actually I am just kidding about the ticket and the donation. :))

You'd really never heard about them? Wow, I guess I didn't make enough noise when the BCRA was being passed, not used, or when the SCUS actually upheld it.

Between MoveOn and ACT (and evening news), the left really had the clinch on soft money.

Which I own.

REALLY good punk/hardcore compilation... and I love the picture of Bush on the front covering his ears as he gets blasted by "Dissent" amplifiers. :D

Hollywood for years has been blacklisting right-wingers. There are very few moderate Republicans but no hardcore right-wingers because they could never find work.

Yeah, that Arnold guy can't get -any- work.

Case-in-point... Johnny Ramone is a die-hard Republican.

Whoda thunk a punk icon would be pro-Establishment? :o

Newsflash... modern music, starting from the 60s on, IS political.

'Cause, like, we all know that Woody Guthrie wasn't being political back in the '30 . . . or . . . George M. Cohan during WWI.

And when was Yankee Doodle written?

Well Woody wrote some pretty damn fine music in favor of labor unions and also as part of the WPA (I believe), George M. got the Congressional Medal of Honor for writing "Over There" kind of our battle song for World War 1 and, of course, "Yankee Doodle" was written to taunt the Brits during the Revolutionary War.

These were all pretty damn political and they're just a small sampling of what leap to mind. Entertainment of all types. at least since the Renaissance, has had political elements to it. Just read Shakespeare for intance.

Of course, the ONLY time people get pissed is when the music or whatever doesn't support their own views. People seem perfectly happy to bestow honors and medals when it does support their side.

True. "Hamlet" is probably my favorite play of all time. Wonderfully dark.

And actually, come to think of it, Dante's Inferno, Purgatorio & Paradisio were INCREDIBLY political.

It was kind of funny to see which people of his time were stuck in which level of Hell (or purging sins in Purgatory or chillin' in Heaven). ;)

Maybe we should just deport everybody that thinks for themselves to France...

You're making a huge jump in logic that was not intended by the original poster.

Free speech cuts both ways.

1) They are free to say what they want.

2) And the public is free to support them or to not support them, based upon their own personal beliefs about what they said.

Do you acknowledge a free society's right to do both of these things?

A lot of liberal celebrities seem to think that they should be free to say whatever they want, without suffereing any consequences. That is not the way a free society works. You have to accept responsibility for your own choices and behavior.
