Gambling - not just Vegas and Atlantic City anymore

Recommended Posts

Indian gaming is turning into some huge business. Private card clubs are also pretty big moneymakers. They are all over California, and my guess is that they are all over everywhere now.

I like to gamble. I find a lot of fun in the entire process. Still, I don't gamble the local casinos or card clubs, and save it for a fun trip to Vegas or the like.

Anyway, what are people's thoughts on the rise of casinos everywhere? My thoughts are that it is a double edged sword. I don't know how much organized crime is involved in operations of them. But I DO know that crime rates around casinos are pretty high, and assaults on winning patrons are pretty frequent.

Add to that that I've already had a couple of cases in the last three months of people who went to a local casino and lost entire paychecks (stupid asses, they are).

Are there casinos in your communities? How do you judge their impacts? Good or bad? Thoughts on how to make them workable? Do you simply hate them?

The big difference is that Atlantic City and Vegas are heavily regulated (and taxed) by the State.

The Indians are sovereign states; so, they don't have to deal with all of the regulation imposed by NH or LV. (There is an Indian Gaming Act which does impose some restrictions.)

I don't have any real opinion on gambling, but it is SAD to see what's happened to Biloxi/Gulf Port.... But I guess it's not sad if you're on the receiving end of the cash flow.

iirc indian casinos cannot 'bank' the table, which leaves out games like craps, blackjack etc where you are playing against the house...

it changes the dynamics significantly enough i dont enjoy gambling at such places..

When I've gone, they've typically been card games, where the house can only make money off of dealer's fees - kind of like paying corkage to a bartender.

Still, they make a helluva lot of money and are MAJOR heavy hitters in the political arena...

They tried putting in a card club about a quarter mile from my mom's house. A recall election was held, and the City Council had to find new jobs and it was stopped, and moved a few miles down the road...

Still, there is apparently plenty of crime in those places. They do make bunches of money, and there seems to be a lot of burglaries, robberies and assaults in them.

I have been to Vegas twice, many years ago, for several weeks at a time. Air Force temporary duty at Nellis. In those days we actually live in hotels down town. In a total of seven weeks I lost $60.00 and gambled every night. Drank and smoked a lot more free stuff than that. The key is that it was not next door and I had fun.

I lived in Omaha Nebraska for three years. Went over to Council Bluffs, Iowa where they have "River Boat" gambling. Lost $100 in one night between my wife and I and didn't really have any fun. This was New Years Eve. Ninety percent of the people there were there because it was Friday night not because it was New Years. Very sad commentary on life and gambling dreams.

Gambling has been legalised gradually in Australia and there are now Casino’s in every larger Metropolitan area and Slot Machines in Bars and Clubs everywhere. I read something that the amount of slot machines per capita is the greatest worldwide.

The major problem down here is the machines – not so much the Casinos. They are available nearly everywhere in Hotels, Clubs, Bar virtually at every corner. This has lead to a major increase in problem gambling with many shattered lives. My sister in law worked during studies in one of those clubs and had to regularly call social workers in when pensioners broke down in tears after gambling their pension away. It is quite tragic actually.

The Casinos have some issue with money laundering, but the system is being tightened at the moment. I personally prefer “centralised” gambling in Casinos as it seems to induce more of a “budget” approach (like when you go to Vegas) and you have to make an effort to get there. A gambling ”club” around the corner is far more tempting for weak addicts and we should do away with it, but unfortunately the industry produces so much tax for State governments that there is no chance….

In Florida, there are Indian casinos in Tampa and near Miami. I remember when the discussion was going on. People were saying that it would introduce gambling to Florida.

We had gambling on cruise boats, dog tracks, horse tracks, the state lottery, bingo night at every church... gambling was new?

Actually, the gambling was the same, it just gave us really nice facilities.

I live in third-world Arkansas. I think if you can afford to gamble, get on the plane or bus and go. Any public/former public offical who pushes gambling is on the take without a conscience. Take a look at Louisiana. Former Governor Edwards of Louisiana is a prime example of how gambling can infect state government. The man is in prision.

Look at Cruz Bustamante in Cali. He was runnign for Gov against Arnie.

It turns out he was accepted an illegal $3.8 million from the Indian casinos (including an astounding and patently illegal $2 million from one tribe). Then said, he won't use it for his campaign, but use it to defeat Prop 54. Incidentally, he would appear in those ads and would also funnel it to his campaign manager to run the anti-Prop 54 ads.

When the court ordered his campaign to pay it back, it couldn't, because the money was already spent.

Indian casinos are probably the single most powerful lobby in California today...

I have 2, soon to be 3 casinos on Indian 'reservations' within 30 minutes of me.

I have a ball when I'm there - free drinks as long as you loiter in the slot machine area. Free concerts and lots of cool atmosphere.

They're also great for business. Lots of new jobs created, and although they aren't required to pay taxes being on 'reservation' land, they do anyway - so thats money for the state (in this case, Connecticut).

I don't see them as negative as long as they try to become good 'neighbors' in the communities that they belong to.

In NM, the indian casinos are just like Vegas.

what is this no "bank" table games? They certainly have those in the NM casinos. However, their liquor license is only valid in the bar area, so no free alcohol on the casino floor, including the slot area.

I don't really have a problem with it, I guess. And the tribes are making money hand over foot. Most of them are too new to see yet what the tribes end up doing with that money over the long term.

excuse my total un-PC-ness, but in NM we called it their "revenge on the white man". good on 'em.
