Vaccinate Against Drug Addiction?

Recommended Posts

John - Wadda you think though, good/bad?

I don't have a pre-formed opinion on it. This is one of those items that I'm going to have to think on for a while, and watch what others say here to help me form an opinion.

On the face of it, it sounds like a wonderful idea.

But then I would also worry about side-effects, and where it will lead. Will there be a pill for everything, to turn children into good little zombies, who are easy to control by parents and government?

And the movie "Gattaca" comes to mind...

No Thank You B|

While I don't use any drugs... this just seems like a really stupid thing to do.

But vaccinating people against possible addiction is stupid.

What is so stupid about it if it has no negative effects? My father was an intelligent, rational, and productive individual, but his physiology was such that he was a sucker for addictive substances. He self medicated with booze most days until he was about 50, and he smoked his entire life. He knew smoking is what caused his heart-attack, stroke, and finally cancer, and still he could not quit, and it killed him. Some may say that he killed himself, and it is partially true. He tried several times, but he simply could not quit.

The article was quite scant on real detail, so it's hard to conclude anything more than it would act to shut down many of the body's pleasure receptors. Maybe that saves one from drug addition, but if the price is that a reduced level of maximum happiness, why would anyone sign up for it? And why would we let parents make that decision for their children?

And given the number of chemists out there inventing new substances to abuse, I have limited faith that this vaccine would still be effective 15 years down the road when these kids start looking for a high.

social engineering is never consider a positive concept, and it's shit like this that is the reason.

So this one person out of tens-of-millions who died as the result of addictive substances. I think his hospital bills were around $500,000.00, and our tax dollars paid the lions share. Imagine the financial impact of a vaccine that would banish tobacco addiction, not to mention the quality of life issues.

I think vaccinating people against addiction is smart, as long as there are no side effect issues.

This just sounds WAY too Orwellian to me...

[reply to turn children into good little zombies, who are easy to control by parents and government?

apparently ritalin did a very good job of that on me until my mother got fed up with it "that is not my son" and took me off despite doctor's orders..

Jeez. I wonder what will happen in the future, when, for example, opiate painkillers do not work. Hey, it may cure the problem of stealing oxy, but Oxy won't be produced, anymore.

They're working on new painkillers with no side effects. The most current one is derived from the poison of the tree dart frog. I think thats what the little critter is called. Anyway this new drug is at least three time more potent than morphine with none of the side effects.

I would be for this vacine under certain cases, i.e., babies born to drug addicted mothers etc.

Good point. We've already started down this road, with a whole generation of children artificially modified to be more "manageable".

In my opinion, our society is way too enamored with taking pills to try and solve their woes.
