Who WAS the Worst President ever?

Recommended Posts

Just wanting to know what y'all thought. I vote Andrew Johnson because his 'make the South pay' policies immediately following the Civil War hurt the nation for many many years.

Clinton is going to win this one hands down...and rightfully so.

Dubious statement at best. There were plenty of presidents who were just as morally bankrupt, and yet had nothing positive come out of their administrations.

Not saying he was a great president, just not the worst...

I didn't see LBJ there.

Interesting opinion. Everyone has one.

Absolutely. So what makes him the worst president ever? And spare me the sex thing. Happened before, and will happen again. Makes him just as bad, not the worst.

I don't know...

I personally don't give a shit about who he was sleeping with. He did an Ok job running the country. I say 'ok' because there isn't really a way to make everyone happy. There will always be people who disagree and people who agree with what is being done by the president. (One of the pluses of being a democratic society.) I certainly don't think he did any worse than the rest of em.

Hmm...sex life...lowering technology transfer standards in return for campaign donations...union giveaways...communist campaign funding...perjury conviction...UN pandering...I could go on.

I agree. The right wingers on this board have quite the obsession over his sex life.

Has nothing to do with sex or being unfaithful. He was simply a bad and most likely the worst president ever.

Why? Too many to list. How about I throw you one, though. He lied to a federal grand jury under oath. That says a lot about his integrity, honesty and ability to lead a nation.

I think what says the most about his ability to lead the nation was the state of the nation during his administration. Make your own comparisons from there.

My high school history classes on all the presidents is extremely fuzzy so I honestly thinkI would have to read up on all the president's before voting for who is worst or best.

And I think that it kind of depends on how you define worst or best -- on how led our country? On integrity? On getting us through a war no matter how? All our president's had faults and strengths -- and in some cases those strengths at the time could be faults if they were President at another time.

People talk about Clinton being the worst because he lied or was immoral -- but what about Nixon? What about all the fact that we had different standards to apply to our leaders 100 years ago? What makes a great leader?

so, I guess I have no answer.

I'd say without a doubt the worst US President in history was William H. Harrison. That guy did jack crap for the country except what he wanted to do, which landed him into trouble.

If you have even a basic grammer school knowledge of US history you'll know who this is and probably atleast get a chuckle.

I figure you need to wait ten or fifteen years to really get an idea of how good or bad a president is. Maybe in five or ten years, I'll have changed my mind on Clinton, much as I did with Reagan (I was not a big Reaganphile until later in college, when I realized the long-term significance of what he did).

That's why I thnk it's premature to say Bush or Clinton was the best or worst ever. Heck, lots of people say JFK. even though he's the one that got us deeply involved in Vietnam. Truman got us involved in Korea, but had some fantastic domestic policies with equality (though his economic policies were iffy, at times).

Van Buren shouldn't be on there? He was left with the depression Jackson caused with his paranoic issues with Biddle's bank, and spent his presidency trying to repair the banking system.

My vote goes to the brilliant general but lousy president Grant - turning his cabinet into a lair for his buddies - all corrupt. Then he defended them. he makes Clinton look squeaky clean.

Harding was similar to Grant - only Harding died before he could be held to answer fully for the scandals.

Actually, my severe dislike for Clinton is because he purjured himself, but I don't think he was the worse we've had.

Harrison has to be the winner, though perhaps Garfield isn't that far behind.

For all the bitching about Clinton, he's got to be in the higher half. Reelection alone puts him way past the label of worst. He actually managed a budget surplus; even if it resulted from a booming economy, it's more than anyone else can say for a long long time.

If we're measuring from a position of abuse of power, it's hard to compete with Nixon and LBJ in modern times.

I think this poll shows that a remarkable number of people are ignorant of US history pre 1992.

Why? How do you know this? Do you know my educational level and aptitude when it comes to presidential history? Maybe we all know history well and still think Clinton was horrible.
