Quote But a land of opportunity has to be one for those that need opportunity, so using first world countries for comparison seems specious. Tell that to steel as that was the point I was trying to make. JumpScars remind us that the past is real
Nightingale 0 #77 July 14, 2004 Steel said that the US was the country "most people in the world" want to come to, and that the European Union (made up of first world countries, I believe) was attempting to emulate the US. I don't believe most people in the world want to come to the US (while some may want better lots for themselves and their families, I think its more an aspect of wanting to get away from where they are, as opposed to really wanting to be here). If you compare first world countries, there are very low exodus rates, because people are fine with where they are and what they have.
SkyDekker 1,465 #78 July 14, 2004 QuoteSo tell me one more time, how many people refer to Holland as the land of opportunity? Actually, one of the problems with Holland and one of the reasons I left holland is that it gives incredible opportunities to people who look to come and live there. The turkish and Marrokkan communities in Holland are huge, all looking for a better or easier way to make money and provide for their families. One of the reasons why it is one of the more densely populated countries in the world.
Ron 10 #79 July 14, 2004 Quotethe only people I've heard refer to the US as the land of opportunity is the people who already live here. The rest of the world doesn't much care. Thats a load of crap. I know of PLENTY of people who are trying to live in America. And not all from third world countries."No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson Papers,
