I just hope we come up with a way to keep these people from becoming engineers or doctors. No problem with a professor of medieval english literature thinking that pi is 3.2. But if your doctor doesn't believe that bacteria can evolve drug resistance, or the architect designing your house doesn't believe in arctangents, people are gonna get hurt. Osama himself, in tapes sent to Al Jazeera called the 9-11 attacks a great victory (for al qaeda, or for muslims in general, whatever), and later OBL outlined in great detail many reasons why the 9-11 attacks were done, and why they were justified, and even why civilians were the targets. I've got absolutely no problem with any doctor or engineer believing in whatever god they choose. But if a doctor believes that bacteria can't evolve, he's going to make bad decisions, decisions that could cause people's death. And a doctor's religious beliefs do not give him the right to put other people at risk. Same thing for a paleontologist, although the risk is much less; he's only going to cause problems for science in general, rather than risk people's lives. If a paleontologist really, firmly believes that at one point every land animal and human being on the earth was on a boat, and every other one perished, his research into the migration of mankind from Africa/the Middle East to the rest of the world is going to be pretty useless. Because, at one point, they all had to die (except for Noah, of course.) Or take a scientist engaged in medical research. If he believes that we are in no way related to primates, he's not going to make the best decisions on which animals to use in animal studies. Most christian scientists I know treat their faith as the moral, rather than the factual, basis for their lives. That's great. A few try to shoehorn the bible into science; this is seen in "intelligent design", the "maybe seven days meant seven billion years" thing. They come up with interesting theories, but you can't really mold science in that way. I knew a few who simply believed that the bible was the absolute truth. The bible states pretty clearly that the universe was created in this order: -the earth covered with water -light -the sky -land -plants that bear fruit and produce seeds -the sun and moon -the stars Now, unless you've got a theory on green plants that don't need sunlight, that's going to take some very selective belief to make that fit into any coherent model of how the earth came to be. Keep in mind that most people don't believe that pi is definitive - heck, they're not even sure what pi IS. And to those people, pi might well be as much of a matter of belief as Genesis is.
