Box Office MoJo -- Fahrenheit 9/11 weekend winner

Recommended Posts

>It's funny people think this movie is doing well. It isn't.

#1 in ticket sales this weekend, even for non-documentaries. #1 first weekend for any documentary ever. It won't touch Star Wars, of course.

>If it opened in 3-4K theaters like most mainstream flicks it would have
> been desolate.

So if it had opened in more theatres fewer people would have gone to see it? Funny logic! In reality, even though it opened on 800 screens, it did _better_ than movies that opened on 3000 screens.

Of course, those numbers represent nothing besides its popularity. It will continue to be popular for as long as the right wingers exhort people to not see it and list its many flaws. Want to guarantee it does well next weekend too? Have a big demonstration or something in front of movie theatres this week; make sure CNN and MSNBC gets shots of the crowd with signs telling people not to see it.

$21.8M in 800 screens and I bet you that movie cost less than 50 million to make. Yeah that was an aweful opening. Please, any hollywood exec would tell you that is a kick ass opening given the distribution. BFC cost 4m to make and took in 120m in ticket sales. You cant compare this movie to TR2 or LB2, please those movies dwarf this one on budget and marketing. Lets wait a few months then if you want to compare we will, my moneys on f9/11 gettin more bang for your buck than TR2 or LB2. Plus those movie opened nation wide. Note I used 'movie' not documentary.

Tuna -- stick to topics you know about -- it appears this ain't one of them. Movies aren't just rated by their absolute totals, but by their return on investment.

For a movie that cost $10 million dollars (total purchase price from Miramax/Disney plus advertising and distribution) . . . a $21 million dollar opening weekend an amazingly good opening weekend and for a documentary, it's unprecedented.

Perhaps MM will donate some of his profits to the Bush campaign and the NRA, after all, they ARE making him rich.

Other than the usual movie print ads in the pink section of the paper, I don't think I've seen a single advertisement for the movie. Spiderman must be over 20M in tv time alone already.

Put another way, Tuna, this movie already made more money than his last one, which got pretty well received by some. Call it a documentary or some less attractive term, this movie will be rated nothing but a glorious success by all involved.

:D Someone once wrote the 60 Minutes a "letter to the editor". They said, "Do me a favor. Never interview Santa Claus." Point being, they put you through the wringer. Dirt buys a lot more advertising sponsors than good news.

I can't actually remember the last time that I went to a movie. I always wait for them to come out on DVD. That way I can pause it and get another coke or "rest".

I also have certain criteria. A movie must have humor, senseless violence, and/or pornographic sex. I have enough problems without concerning myself with the fictitious lives of someone on-screen. I go to the movies to be entertained. B|

If the Attack of The Killer Tomatoes had been shot with 75% of the cast nude, I'd own the DVD.

#1 It's not a documentary.

It's only your "opinion" that it isn't.

#2 It did very well. 222nd best opening ever. Almost had a more impressive opening than Legally Blonde 2. Not too bad, I guess.

Honestly...what color is the sky in your world?:S

For being only on 800-ish screens, and for it's genre, the movie turned out phenomenally great numbers and set records for its opening.

Maybe it will do as well as "The Passion of the Christ?" Cost 30 mil to make and so far has grossed 970 mil worldwide.

Hmmm... 30 mil to make 970 mil. That's 32.3 mil made for every mil spent.

If F9/11 wants to do better than the Passion on a bang for bucks rating it has to make 194 mil worldwide... It did well over a tenth of that in it's first weekend... hmmm... Now should the total be before or after book sales?

Number one at the box office this weekend despite the relatively low number of screens . . . pretty impressive no matter how you look at it.

Um, its only competition were movies like "Dodgeball", "Garfield", and "The Terminal", where Tom Hanks wanders around in an airport terminal for weeks on end. Big freakin' deal... Given what was available, it was tops. But being tops in such a mundane batch of new movies, really isn't saying much.

Last time I checked we were talking about a movie so, maybe the Hollywood definition (by which I assume you mean my previously posted reference to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences definition) probably does mean more to me than something written for a dictionary.

Look up skydiving for instance in the same links you provided. Do you agree that those are all inclusive definitions or would you trust a definition from the USPA as having more meaning?

So now dictionaries aren't valid for finding definitions? I got it. :S

The definitions for skydiving are fine. Not all inclusive, but fine. I guess you just don't like the "FACTUAL and OBJECTIVE" parts of the definition... so you'll just redefine the word to make it work for you. Nice.

I don't agree with the word "objective" as it does NOT apply to the majority of documentaries. Seriously. Most documentaries have a very specific point of view.

If you want "objective" then you enter into the world of journalism.

As for "factual" -- "Fahrenheit 9/11" -is- factual. If you are telling me otherwise, then you're also telling me that you haven't actually seen it. Does it also contain some opinion and conjecture -- sure -- some parts do, but the majority of the film shows facts recorded by others. It's not a work of fiction. It's recent history seen through the selective view point of Michael Moore, but they -are- facts. I believe I've said that at least twice now.

I won't argue this with you anymore. Take your objections about the definitions to the dictionary people.

I notice you haven't argued that it fits with the definition of propaganda better than documentary though....

Actually, I took a film class at NYU, they weren't teaching how to use a dictionary. Maybe you missed English class?

Besides, most people don't need a film class to read a dictionary. I guess the definition of "documentary" is subjective too? How about we make everything that YOU don't agree with "subjective" so you always have something to argue?

Like I said, get MW to change the definitions if you don't like 'em.

It's really a shame when people argue with me and don't look at the references I make. I'm almost certain you would have liked it, but you were so busy just trying to shout anyone down you didn't even take the time.

Too bad.

Now, take the time and LOOK and the http://www.leni-riefenstahl.de/ and I'll bet you a donut you'll understand what I'm talking about.

(And get your money back from that film class. They obviously didn't teach you who she was.)
