do you give money to homeless people/beggars?

Recommended Posts

No, I won't give some bum standing on the side of the street a dime. Why? My parents came to this country with barely anything, and they worked hard to give me a good education and give me the opportunity to do well for myself. I myself worked hard to get where I am. I've worked since I was sixteen, paying my own way through college and what not. It wasn't fun, but it had to be done.

I'm not going to give a bum money because they've been and still are too lazy to get a real job, especially if they're just standing there asking for money. The ones that might would be the ones that are playing some instrument on the sside of the road. At least they're trying.

A quarter change from a bagel isn't much. Why not give it to the waiter or waitress behind the counter? They can actually use it, and they're working for it. If you have extra money that you can spend, tip people in the service industries (ie: wait staff, bartendars, mechanics, etc).

I do it all the time. The only times I have refused is when I dont have any money with me. Im sure I have been scammed lots of times, but I like to think that if I have helped at least one person then its worth it.

If you're doing it to feel good, cool. Helping them, you ain't.

'help' is many different things to different people... unless you are there in that moment you can not make that assertion.

If you live in a warm weather state (Fla, Calif, Texas), it is easier to be dysfunctional. (You can't live in a sleeping bag in the winter in Michigan.)

When I was 17, I worked in a produce packing house. I stacked boxes with quite a few guys who had severe drinking problems. They lived in the woods and worked for 3 or 4 weeks until they had enough money for a bender. They would stay drunk for 2 weeks and then return to work.

What has happened is that well-intentioned people are now "enablers". They enable people to continue in their dysfunctional lifestyle by giving them money.

During fruit picking season, homeless people used to live in housing on the farms. Now they get shelter, food, and enough money to abuse their poison of choice. I don't see this as helping them.
