50th anniversary yesterday of...

Recommended Posts

Yesterday, June 9, was the 50th anniversay of Boston lawyer Joseph Welch's famous quote:

***"Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness."

After a continued attack by the Senator he said

"Let us not assassinate this lad further, senator. You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency? Have you left no sense of decency?"

Welch was applauded in the Senate chamber. Overnight, the stranglehold that Joseph McCarthy held over the public was obliterated.

I think we should all appreciate that moment of a man who refused to be bullied.

I would have added this yesterday, but I got called up to the Bay Area..

Makes me wonder how many on here would have been McCarthy supporters. I'm pretty sure I could pick them out.

One thing for sure, the pinkos didn't take over the county. -yet

Damnit, that's my problem!!! I spend half a day every morning cleaning up the elephant shit, and all I needed to do was tear up a piece of paper? Christ, why didn't anyone tell me sooner?

Thank you, Prof. K.

I had been wondering what to do in the future -- you see Bugs, our kitty, has the primary responsibility of elephant deterrent and she has performed flawlessly in the role. But she is getting on in years (20 this fall) and I ws wondering how we were going to replace her when the time came.

Thanks to your brilliant statement I now know not only what to do at that sad time, but I also have a method to give her a day off every now and then.

Thank you so very much.

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more money.

Why do they call it "Tourist Season" if we can't shoot them?

You conveniently leave out the fact that he was right, and that many congress staffers and the entire CIA was infiltrated.

If we had relied on the CIA for info during the cold war, well, we wouldn't have had any. If not for the DIA and other agencies, we would have been blind, or worse, looking in the wrong direction.

You're right. There were lots of Communists everywhere. But there were a helluva lot of people whose lives were ruined undeservedly.

He trampled on people's rights, and made a mockery of the system. In sum, he found people and tried to find somethign they did wrong, as opposed to a just system that seeks to find something wrong and discover who did it.

Don't get me wrong, McCarthy is still a SOS in my book, but he wasn't wrong. He just went about it the wrong way.

(and he may have been a bit psycho)

And it's a fact that terrorist exist. That doesn't give anyone permission to go out and interrogate, accuse, arrest, and ruin the lives of anyone suspicious. Unless of course you're one of many GWB supporters on here who advocate that.

It took them 3 years to charge 3 people?

Fuck! It would take me maybe a week - (at least until the weekend) before I started telling them I was an alien rabilizard from Planet goonballsk - just so they would let me go to the DZ.

3 years for 3 dudes. Wow. There's a production line for you...

I believe theyhave released more people without charge than they have actually charged.......After a couple of years of detention that is.

Was McCarthy really so different from what he was allegedly fighting?

I suspect that both McCarthy and Uncle Joe would have agreed on a lot... Free Speech, Criminal Procedure, Sentencing and Capital Punishment....

It is to celebrate the defeat of the behaviour and methodsused, not the political "colour" used to justify that behaviour.

Whoops!... Sitting here (pi$$ed as I am), it's just occured to me that the good senator and tail gunner "Joe" McCarthy shares a first name with Uncle Joe Stalin!

Speaking of... Err... "Tail Gunners":S, yeah, lets not forget Mr. Hoover... Whose motives in seizing Hermann Goering's entire collection of dresses & lingerie, were, I'm sure, unimpeachable.:P

Looking back on it, how could people fall for that kind of crap........But then again, look how people supported the Iraq invasion without a second thought:|

Well, I know........read the words from Jim below and he pretty much sums it up.[:/]

Take any political speech in the last year, replace "terrorist" with "communist" and you have a McCarthy speech. Fear is a powerful tool when used by politicians for their own gain.
