TypicalFish 0 #1 June 7, 2004 [rant] Can we let the rhetoric go for a FLIPPIN' WEEK until the man is in the ground? There will be plenty of time (forever, actually) to debate his legacy. A few gems from today's op-ed in the LA Times: "My late father used to brag that he had voted against Reagan 4 times; I can only brag to my children that I voted against him twice." "He was a disastrous leader and a failure as a President, despite his enourmous popularity with a duped American public." "He handed over the Republican Party agenda to the religious right. With a legacy like that, and for the sake of his family, I doubt he will rest in peace." Fucking classless Limousine Liberal morons. I ask them, what the f$%# have you done with YOUR life? You don't have to agree with his politics, but now is the time to keep the negative opinions to yourself. I think you can probably guess my opinion of our current administration; however, if anything were to happen to Dubya, I would stand quietly in respect to the PRESIDENT OF MY COUNTRY. Christ on a crutch, show a little respect. [/rant]"I gargle no man's balls..." ussfpa on SOCNET
wmw999 2,589 #2 June 7, 2004 Sounds good to me. The "relentlessly liberal" 60 Minutes had a lovely retrospective, including a piece that was as nice an obituary as I've seen. Yes, sometimes it is all about remembering the good. Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)
quade 4 #3 June 7, 2004 While I'll agree that a period of respectful quiet should be given, certainly at least until the body is in the ground, what part of Op-Ed don't you understand? The Op-Ed, especially the Letters to the Editor, are usually the least important part of any news organization. They can be amusing and infuriating, but seldom insightful -- occasionally, yes, but usually no.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
livendive 8 #4 June 7, 2004 I guess I disagree in theory but not in application. I can think of no reason that someone's death should prompt us to only say nice things about them, but I usually keep negative comments to myself and close friends in the immediate aftermath of someone dying. My reasons have nothing to do with honoring the decedent, but rather letting those who mourn the passing grieve in peace. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" mardigrasbob 0 #8 June 7, 2004 I was always taught ' do not speak ill of the dead'. But, I realize that some people weren't taught manners. How about a 5 day moratorium on Reagan bashing. After the poor man is in the ground; then let the haters hate. Quick note: I really disliked Nixon when he was President, mainly because I thought he was a paranoid with no heart. When I saw the way he blubbered and broke down at his wife, Pat's funeral;I grew up and realized that he was just a poor lonely old man who lost the love of his life. -Have a heart!- Bob
TheAnvil 0 #9 June 7, 2004 OK dude. If you don't want to spontaneously combust, don't go to http://www.democraticunderground.com to see what the compassionate[sic], caring[sic], and classy[sic] denizens of that cesspool had to say about the passing of President Reagan. It made me want to retch. Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!

quade 4 #14 June 8, 2004 Judging the entire Democratic Party by that web site would be about as accurate as judging the entire Republican Party by looking at one of these. I have no respect for those people (over 90% of the posters here in ShoutBack). Use your own brain...not what a party tells you. I do not align myself with any one party. Michele 1 #16 June 8, 2004 Quote but not that statement. The people being crass are the exception, it's just that they stick out more. Oh, PK, I can't agree. I agree with the original sentiment, inasmuch as common courtesy and respect are significantly lacking in my generation and those younger than I. It's a pity, it really is. I look at each candidate and decide for myself if he would be the man I would want to run my country. Funny you would say that (btw, I agree completely); I was having that very discussion TODAY with a friend of mine who works on the Hill. They are quite disgusted with the "labelling" process that has seemingly spun out of control and is, quite frankly, at its WORST inside the halls of our government. It is a frustration for those of us whose viewpoints do not necessarily "toe the party line". Me, for example; I am a true bleeding heart when it comes to the environment, corporate oversight (not regulation) and social programs (tempered with personal responsibility), and am also pro-choice; at the same time I believe that we can't spend ENOUGH on our military, believe in "big stick" diplomacy, and also believe that we all have a responsibility to our country and its leaders, right or wrong. I also think Michael Moore is a flaming jackass. Where does that put me? Sometimes I don't know. I DO know that I don't like being called "liberal", or "conservative", or whatever. My viewpoints on different issues are informed by the data relevant to that particular issue. I think it's funny when someone thinks they know how you think about EVERYTHING because they know your opinion on a FEW things."I gargle no man's balls..." ussfpa on SOCNET
