Well, I would certainly hope that they would be somewhat liberal with their definition of "normal", but seriously, some people are well out of range. And I don't think children need to "want to lose weight" any more than a dog does. If your dog is overweight, you're going to put him on a diet for his health. Same thing with a child. And the child doesn't need to know what's going on any moreso than a pet. Or just explain that you're helping them be "healthier", not "skinnier", becasue that's what this is about, after all.

Obviously you missed the sarcasm here -

It was a stab at the way that the school systems are becoming anti-competitive....

Ok, how about competitive PE to get these kids on track in each grade? Yes, being ant-competitive is no way teach kids the reality of life. Sometimes it takes the local law to get a parent into a parent/teacher conference where my wife teaches.

Have you taken a look at some of the parents? Yeah...the school could send a report card home for the kids who do not meet the weight criteria, but if the parents aren't taking care of themselves, the children won't be taken care of nor learn how to take care of themselves by feeding themselves properly and exercising.

When I was a college student, the university (Cambridge) posted all grades outside the Senate House where they were available for anyone to read. The university also sent the exam results to the newspapers and the London Times, Daily Telegraph, and Guardian published them for the world to see. (It was fine by me because I got a "double first").

In the US we are prohibited by FERPA from even telling the parents what a kid's grades are if the kid is over 18 - it is a federal felony to reveal the information. Many parents aren't aware of this until the kid is finally kicked out 'cos the kids lie about their grades.

For every parent with an IQ over 120 there is one with an IQ less than 80.

In the absence of compulsory sterilization of the stupid, society has to step in at some point to help the kids of incompetent parents.

We should leave well alone. This is natural selection at work. Nature is attempting to counteract the trend of stupid people out-breeding intelligent people.

Well then....I guess that will be the parent's "wake up call" when their 18 year old gets sent home. You're supposed to have some form of maturity by that age and are accountable for your own action. I think we're primarily talking about "children" in this thread. Someone below the legal age of consent.

unfourtunately, the "stupid people" outnumbering the "intelligent people" can vote socialized health care for them selves, and make the "intelligent people" support them.

Natural selection no longer applies to humans.

In the 80's Singapore attempted to compensate for all the stupid people having babies by introducing a scheme which benefited bright educated women who had kids whilst at the same time offering a cash incentive to less intelligent women to get themselves sterilized after dropping a couple of sprogs.

Maybe western governments could introduce a similar scheme with regard to food: compensation for thin people and sterilization for fatties. An incentive of a years supply of McDonalds would probably draw them in.

Singapore also dropped the criminalization of chewing gum today that begain in the 80's because someone stuck a piece in a subway door causing delays in the 80's. You're now free to get it at a pharmacy from a licensed pharmacist with a doctor's permission. :S

Thank you, Cora! You've hit the nail on the head.

I think it can be summed up this way -
School: "Hey, parent(s), you're kid is fat."
Parent(s): "No, shit."
S: "Yeah, we are concerned about his health."
P: "Yeah, us, too. We gots ta buys her some clothes."
S: "It's bad for her to be a fatty."
P: "We dun tried telling her that, but she said that the "Operation Self-Esteem" folks at school said that she's a beautiful person inside, and what is outside doesn't matter."
S: "Well, that's fine, but we are concerned about her diet."
P: "Yeah, us, too. She wastes her allowance on Cokes from school vending machines and candy from school fund raisers. I think she's up to four packages of 50 cent Reese's."
S: "We think that parent discipline should be a part of this to help her out. Try limiting her diet to rice, soy, tofu and lentils."
P: "We did that once before. Then the teachers reported that she kept saying she was hungry. We got investigated for child abuse. Then they put her on the school lunch and breakfast program."
S: "Well, that's a federal mandate. Um, we try to make our meals nutritious. but the point is, your daughter is fat, and we thought we should tell you."
P: "As we said, 'No shit." THink we need a report card to tell us that?"

I think this is a good idea but it won't work for several reasons.
1. Kids in elementary school do not control what they eat. They eat what their parents give them. If the kid is overweight, more often than not its because their parents don't feed them right and probably don't know how to. (Most people don't) Even less people know how to diet properly. I can't begin to count how many times I have heard stupid remarks coming from fat people such as, "I don't overeat but I am still overweight". That tells me they do not understand how calories work and that once fat is stored one has to have a calorie deficit inorder to loose it. In other words once you have gained extra weight you must eat less to loose the extra weight you put on. Now I go into specific details about how calories work and how many calories one must loose to loose a pound or what happens if you over eat with fat, as opposed to carbs or protein. But that would be difficult to explain in one posting. I know how it works because I have read a lot about it and because I have made it work for me. In the past six months I lost 5 inches off my waist and 25 pounds with that. Simultaneously I put 2 inches of muscle back on my chest and an inch on my arms. I researched all the needed information to accomplish my goals because I cared. It was not because I was rich enough to afford high quality food or because I was some kind of genius that understood how diets work. If money or intelligence was what is needed to stay in shape then I wouldn't have coe-workers earning 6 figure salaries who are more than 100 pounds over weight.

2. Another reason I find that this won't work is because different people have different body types. If you take my height and weight you can quickly do a search and find a table which will categorize me as obese. That is something I find rather humourous. The average American adult male has between 15 and 18% bodyfat. I come up around 8%. I have difficulty purchasing a belt because my waist is to small (31"), I have washboard abs and for that matter all the visible muscles in my body have at least some degree of definition. Still every table I have ever seen says that I am overweight and typically they put me 5 pounds under obese. (5'9" 195 lbs.)
If I could make a wish, I think I'd pass.

I think its a good idea. thats bullshit that kids will be teased for getting a Fat report... the bullies have eyes, they can see if someone is fat or not without a report about it.

but will it make these kids skinnier? probably not... but it couldn't hurt.

Ok, but how many schoolchildren have washboard abs and bulging biceps? I think they'll be more likely to fit into the actual BMI table. And maybe if nothing else, this will help parents of anorexic children realize there is a problem. Some parents wish to turn a blind eye to a child's eating disorder, and this might force them to take a closer look.

Again, just a thought. And I still don't see how this could be a problem . . . at most, it might be 100% ineffective, but I don't even see that.
