freeflydrew 0 #1 June 3, 2004 http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/06/03/tenet.resigns/index.html QuoteWASHINGTON (CNN) -- CIA Director George Tenet has resigned, citing personal reasons, President Bush said Thursday. Tenet's resignation takes effect in mid-July, after which Deputy Director John McLaughlin will become the agency's acting chief, Bush told reporters at the White House. Bush said that Tenet informed him of his decision Wednesday night. Bush said Tenet had done "a superb job for the American people." "He has been a strong and able leader at the agency," Bush said. "He has been a strong leader in the war on terror and I will miss him." He had faced heavy criticism over the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington, and on the war in Iraq, in which pre-invasion U.S. estimates that Iraq was amassing stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction now appear to have been incorrect. Bush made the announcement before boarding Marine One for a flight to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. He is on his way to Europe, where he will attend ceremonies marking the 60th anniversary of the D-Day invasion in World War II. (Full story) Tenet was sworn in as the Director of Central Intelligence on July 11, 1997 by President Clinton. A native New Yorker, Tenet holds a degree in foreign service from Georgetown University and in international affairs from Columbia University.
PhillyKev 0 #2 June 3, 2004 I was just about to post the same thing, with the same type of subject line Now if Rumsfeld and Ashcroft would follow his lead, and Bush hired some competent people, I might actually consider re-electing him.
freeflydrew 0 #3 June 3, 2004 i don't want to judge one's competency, but i do agree that if there were more resignations, it would practically guarantee bush's re-election...

When Ashcroft is fired, I'd like to see him go into full-on fucked up Pentecostal fury, speaking in tongues, while handling snakes and writhing on the floor. It'd really show what a whack-job he is... (Edit for misspelling)

I expect that's what would happen if someone removed the robe that he had put over the statue of Justice (at massive taxpayer expense) because he didn't want to be offended by the partially nude statue. Gawain 0 #8 June 3, 2004 A lot of commentary on the news channels. I'm surprised, but not at the same time. Tenet was the first DCI in over 25 years to serve under two Presidents. He has plusses and minuses... PROS: -Effective intel enabling a swift campaign in Afghanistan -Effective use of intel from the would-be New Year's bombing at LAX -Rebuilt the CIA (literally) after neglect in the 1990s CONS: -9/11 (not solely responsible of course, but points were missed) -Intel integrity for Iraq -Intel in Afghanistan has not helped to capture OBL Just my $.02. I don't think we'll see an appointment by the President before the election. Warts and all, Tenet served ably in a job that I wouldn't want.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light!
