Deuce 1 #29 May 27, 2004 I really do. Orwell figured out brillliantly in 1984 that every society needs an enemy to keep it focused. Gosh, I wish I could remember the cartoon character's name, but he said "I have met the enemy, and he is us"
happythoughts 0 #30 May 27, 2004 QuoteOrwell figured out brillliantly in 1984 that every society needs an enemy to keep it focused. A while back, there was a science fiction movie like that. A group of scientists created an "alien" from a volunteer and armed him. Then he threatened the world with destruction to unite it. wmw999 2,589 #31 May 27, 2004 QuotePogo Yup But I think we need to move this conversation into one of the ecology-is-bunk threads now, because it was a line referring to conservation, and was a pretty popular Earth Day poster in the early 70's. Those damn hippies Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. When I read that book in 1983 I thought it was a masterful work, but he had missed the mark on predicting what future society would be like. But now I'm not so sure; maybe he just got the date wrong. BTW if you want to read a truly eerie vision of the future, check out "the machine stops." It very accurately describes the kind of mental masturbation that happens on-line, where conversations get so divorced from reality that you end up making endless commentaries on what someone else wrote, commentaries that are so removed from direct experience that they have no relevance any more. It talks about how the world becomes smaller not because we can get anywhere very quickly, but because we can use the net to do business in Singapore from an office in NY. People get fat and immobile because they never move from their couch; they can be in touch with every part of the world, they can have every entertainment imaginable brought to them via TV and the Net. And the eeriest part about it? It was written in 1909.
