KKK on campus

Recommended Posts

Just curious what you political "experts" feel about this.

Not that anyone would admit it, but is there any dz.commer who is or believes in the beliefs of the KKK? Come on now, I've seen a lot of you redneck hillbillies at the dz's and your more than questionable racist behavior. Fess up ;)

depends on whether or not the Uni is public or private. If its a private school, they can ban what they wish. If its a public school, they have a right to free speech there, as long as they follow the guidelines required by the university and don't break any laws.

I doubt the terrorism thing will fly, because the klan has been rather inactive over the past years. However, I would say that their past behavior of bombing churches and terrorizing african americans would definitely qualify them as a terrorist organziation. It depends on how the courts choose to interpret the laws.

Oh come on -- didn't you ever throw a lit firecracker into a beehive just to see what happened? :)
That said, well, rights only work if everyone gets them, including the detestable. Ick.

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

This is an unidentified firecracker - how am I suppose to argue with it?

Berkeley has a free speach hour at lunch everyday in the main plaza. Anyone can reserve the time to use the amplified setup to spout anything, though I'm not sure if it's merely first come first serve, or what. It's always a hoot when the Christians come. Think about the most obnoxious audience at a comedy club.

I think it's fine for the campus to only allow school affiliated groups to speak on campus. The Klan can find a supporter to sponsor them, or they can find another outlet for their propoganda.

Exactly. Just because I disagree with their message does not give me the right to try to silence it.

Hmmm...I don't know about you guys, but over here, inciting racial hatred and promoting any kind of prejudice is unconstitutional. Although everyone has the right to free speech, any group known for its dissemination of racist ideas would have a hard time trying to find strong legal arguments for their case if something like this occured.

>inciting racial hatred. . .

It's illegal here only if it falls under a hate crimes statute. For the most part, spouting off any sort of nonsense (outside of telling people to perform illegal acts) is protected under the constitution. There was a lawsuit filed against the film "the passion of christ" because it was thought that such a film would promote hatred of Jews (hey, they killed Jesus!) It failed, which is good (I think.)

>and promoting any kind of prejudice is unconstitutional.

Free speech trumps the right to live free of prejudice. We have politicians today who are taking stands _against_ gay rights.

Well, again, there's that free speech thing. By the same token, though, private universities have their _own_ right to free speech, and that right extends to not letting the KKK speak.

I think our school has a formal policy against hate speech. Not that it matters since "State Street that Great Street" runs right through the middle of the campus, so anyone can stand in the public street and say whatever they like.

Personally I don't care who speaks on campus. If the KKK or Black Panthers want to waste their breath, that's fine with me.

Why not? It's what they do in Germany and Britain.
Try saying something "detestable" there -- like "The Holocaust never happened."

Because the US is not one of those countries.

Those countries have their own laws, and their citizens are bound by them, but those laws have no jurisdiction here. We are bound by the first amendment, which grants freedom of speech and the freedom to peaceably assemble. There are no restrictions on what views can be expressed. Although I disagree with the messages put forth by some groups, I will NEVER attempt to trample on their right to assemble and express their views, because that is my right too, and I'd like to keep it, thanks. If I successfully lobby to take away their rights, there is nothing stopping someone else from returning the favor.

BAn them if you want but if that happens then I think all political outside groups should be banned from the campus. Otherwise let them be, and argue it out in debate with other campus activists. Better to have them out in the open where they can be watched than drive them underground.

Care to expand on that statement Jeffrey?

Ditto

I'd rather have the KKK with a bright light shining on them vs. them doing there dirty deeds in the dark.

Actually as an African American Man when I hear these hate speeches it amuses me.

When I was in 9th grade, integration was implemented in 9 Southern states.

The KKK showed up outside the school and handed out their newsletter, The Fiery Cross. On the front page was a pic of the White House with 3 KKK protesters in front.

I noticed that the WH fence had a shadow, but the protesters didn't and asked the guy if one picture was overlaid on the other. His response? "What are you boy, some kinda trouble maker?" An incorrect answer got you beaten.

Boston is still in the news this year, 35 years later, trying to finalize their busing plan. A lot of people in the North were sure surprised when someone said "Ok, you guys too now..." We in the racist South are appalled by their attitude. ;)
