This two-year study determined North Carolina's capital cases cost at least an extra $2.16 million per execution, compared to what taxpayers would have spent if defendants were tried without the death penalty and sentenced to life in prison. Applying those figures nationally would mean $1.69 billion were spent on the 784 executions carried out nationwide since 1976 (in 1993 dollars).

Id rather be dead right now than spend the next 30 years in jail. The wors thing about jail is that it is full of people that I dont believe are criminals. Drug users. They have a problem, they are not criminals....Criminals hurt other. People with diseases hurt themselves and ahoud not be punished.

Ok, I understand...but did that study take into account (I'm sure it probably did) the extra space in prison for those 784 criminals were they not executed?

I've read similar studies. They took into account the cost for housing (including space concerns) as well as other costs involved, both for keeping an inmate in prison, and for execution.
