Jerry Springer named "Democrat of the Year"

Jerry Springer Named Democratic Delegate

Sun May 16, 4:09 AM ET

CINCINNATI - Ohio Democrats have chosen talk-show host Jerry Springer to be an at-large delegate for the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

"He's made 50 appearances at Democratic events this year. He's been an outspoken advocate for the party," said Dan Trevas, spokesman for the Ohio Democratic Party.

Springer, who was the mayor of Cincinnati before hosting the raunchy "The Jerry Springer Show," was named Democrat of the Year by the state party last weekend. He was named Friday as one of 159 delegates and 24 alternates from Ohio at the convention July 26-29, when Sen. John Kerry is expected to be nominated as the party's candidate for president.

"We welcome all delegates," said Jennifer Palmieri, Ohio spokeswoman for the Kerry campaign.

State Republicans said Democrats sank low by naming Springer as a delegate.

"They ought to be absolutely embarrassed and ashamed of this guy, but obviously standards take a back seat to power in the party of Bill Clinton," Ohio Republican chairman Robert T. Bennett said.

Springer, 60, spent about $1 million last year exploring whether to run for the Senate before deciding not to challenge incumbent Republican Sen. George Voinovich. He said he realized he couldn't be elected as long as he continued to host his syndicated talk show.

Springer is considering running in 2006 for either Ohio governor or for the state's other Senate seat.

My great grandfather came from Croatia to Minnesota about a hundred years ago. His name was Rodosovich (something like that). So, yeah, those north central corn states do... :P:D

Let me add Al Sharpton and Marion Barry.

Of course there are also Arnold Schwartzenegger, Pat Buchanan, Ronald Reagan, Dan Quayle, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, and George W. Bush...clowns abound on both sides of the aisle.

So tell me, what exactly makes Schwartzenegger or Buchanan a clown? Or even Reagan for that matter. I won't argue there aren't clowns on both sides, but I strongly disagree with your list of examples unless you can back it up.

Have you ever heard Schwartzenegger speak or seen him try to act?

Here's Pat Buchanan's answer to the gay marriage ruckus...
Quote

"Rather than going down the endless road of a constitutional amendment to protect marriage, as we failed to do, in protecting the flag, Congress should re-enact the Defense of Marriage Act, restricting marriage to men and women, and add this provision: "This law is not subject to review by the U.S. Supreme Court."

Picture of Reagan attached...that plus his way of speaking made him absolutely qualify him as a clown.

On the whole I'd prefer a clown in the White House to the current liar who uses our boys' lives to conduct his personal vendetta.

But that's just my opinion, I guess.

Ummm . . .

While most of his career was spent as an action movie star, I think this qualifies Arnold as a clown.
Kindergarten Cop

And if you don't think Reagan qualifies, then you really need to see this movie.
Bedtime for Bonzo

Buchanan's work speaks for itself. He doesn't need a movie to look like a clown. http://www.mtsu.edu/~baustin/buchanan.html

So everyone with an accent is unsuited to hold public office? I have to say considering he had an accent even in his own country (imagine deep Louisiana bayou) his mastery of English is commendable. I respect anyone who speaks English better than I speak their language.

I agree Buchanan has some "interesting" views on how much the government should be involved here at home, but read his foreign policy pieces. He is very astute. Hell, if I were Pres, he would be on the short list for Sec State.

So all actors are unqualified for public office and setting policy?

>So all actors are unqualified for public office and setting policy?

Given the current state of politics in the US, being an actor is the perfect preparation for public office. They can portray any role they want to (the serious and thoughtful father-of-two, the steely-eyed patriot, the conciliatory peacemaker) and thus be all things to all people, which will get them elected. Once in office, their experience with hollywood backstabbing will give them an edge over people from other sectors of society; they will be masters of the scapegoat, the sound bite and the smear. They'll be able to waffle, take strong positions on nonissues and blamestorm with the best of them.

Bad for the future of the US, perhaps, but great experience for being a politician.

You're putting words in my mouth (ok, keyboard). I said these people are clowns. The screaming Howard Dean did earlier this year was nothing compared to some of what Schwarzenegger's done.

When I typed his name in my post, I was initially thinking of Pat Robertson. I almost retracted it, but then realized I don't have to. Buchanan's a clown too. :-)

I didn't say that. I said Reagan was/is a clown. How you translate that into "all actors are unqualified for public office" is beyond me.

Also, to quote the site you linked to
Quote

After Sen. Carol Moseley Braun blocked a federal patent for a Confederate flag insignia, Buchanan wrote that she was "putting on an act" by associating the Confederacy with slavery: "The War Between the States was about independence, about self-determination, about the right of a people to break free of a government to which they could no longer give allegiance," Buchanan asserted. "How long is this endless groveling before every cry of 'racism' going to continue before the whole country collectively throws up?" (syndicated column, 7/28/93)

I wouldn't call that bigoted, I would call that a fairly common view.

Quote

In a memo to President Nixon, Buchanan suggested that "integration of blacks and whites -- but even more so, poor and well-to-do -- is less likely to result in accommodation than it is in perpetual friction, as the incapable are placed consciously by government side by side with the capable." (Washington Post, 1/5/92)

'

You want to tell me that didn't happen and isn't happening?

Quote

"There is nothing wrong with us sitting down and arguing that issue that we are a European country." (Newsday, 11/15/92)

What, the country doesn't have European roots?

Quote

Buchanan on affirmative action: "How, then, can the feds justify favoring sons of Hispanics over sons of white Americans who fought in World War II or Vietnam?" (syndicated column, 1/23/95)

So racism is ok as long as it's going the other way? What happened to MLK's teaching that 'we don't want or need your help,' is that gone?

That site is so PC, socialist, and racist that I have not the words to express my disgust.

I wouldn't call that bigoted, I would call that a fairly common view.

On the radio today they read a whole bunch of letters from the Eisenhower library written to Ike in 1954 after the Brown decision, mostly expressing the common view in the southern states that niggers were dirty, diseased scum who should be kept segregated for the good of the white children. The library has about 100,000 such letters.

Given that this was such a common view, I suppose it wasn't bigoted.

So next you're going to tell me that affirmative action isn't racist?

Would you prefer that common sense be thrown out the window and groveling begin every time someone cries "racism?"

edit: 100,000 out of hundreds of millions does not qualify as "common" to me.

Sometimes you make it too easy.

I can't remember if it was the AWB sunset or the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, but I think 35,000 people wrote their senator about the bill....from Alaska alone!!

Millions of Americans write their public officials on a regular basis about firearms issues. THAT is commonly held beliefs.

OK, so the guy has a big voice. That's one reason I like him. I just disagree with him on a lot of domestic issues. I do, however, think he makes some good points in the article (along with some very odd statements).

As to the Sec State thing, yeah, I suppose he wouldn't really be on the list, but he would definitely approve of what my State Dept would do. Have you read A Republic, Not An Empire?

Criminals can't be humanitarians? :D:D

I would suggest you read up on Pablo Escobar. Many of the Columbian Drug Lords are some of the greatest humanitarians and philanthropists when it comes to helping out their own people.

Of course the will kill you and your family for a few generations if you cross them, but they can be great humanitarians. :D
