Erroll 80 #26 May 19, 2004 My favourite actor of all time, Charles Bronson (Buchinsky), was a tail gunner. So was Roy Born. Tyrone Power was a pilot but I don't think he flew bombers. Some more trivia:- Donald Pleasance, who (together with Bronson) played a POW in The Great Escape, really was a pilot (RAF) and was shot down and held as a POW by the Germans. Cold enough to freeze hands to those 50. cal guns if the gunner took his gloves off.Do you want to have an ideagasm?
happythoughts 0 #28 May 19, 2004 My father was a bombardier in WWII in North Africa. In NA, the crews flew 50 missions because it was a different area. They did bomb Italy and Germany also. He said that they would lose 10 planes on any run. 100 crew members. Losses like that would be unacceptible today. Yet they still got back in the plane on their next assignment. He had to bail out on the return flight from one run. First jump course - static line, at night, over unlit mountainous terrain, possibly enemy held. My uncle flew out of England and landed on one engine with a shot-up plane and crew. He received a medal and the undying respect of his crew, some of who couldn't have bailed out.
