Rules reminder: hate posts

Recommended Posts

From the DZ.com rules:

------------------
Personal attacks and hate posts will not be tolerated in any forum. . .

Posts that contain material that we deem to be blatantly or unnecessarily racist, sexist, homophobic, bigoted, pornographic, or otherwise offensive, will be removed.

A member who is rude, excessively profane, or disruptive may receive a warning or may be suspended or banned immediately.
-----------------

That means no comments about towelheads or sand niggers, and no gratuitious attacks on a race or religion. There is much discussion going on about the role of Islam in the Iraq war / the 9-11 attacks etc and that's fine. But a few people have been pushing the limits of that lately. This is fair warning that it won't be tolerated any more.

Question.

What would be the difference in someone stating an opinion that they believe that homosexuality is rrong, for instance if they believe religiously it is wrong. Would that be considered homophobic?

I ask, since with the semi-vague outline that you listed, W****** (insert your real name:P), it might come up as a point of confusion for someone.

Basically, I'm just asking for a good outline so folks don't get bent out of shape on what they would consider "their version" of what you've listed.

Oh, thanks for seperating this from the old TB, its nice to have it in its own corner, keeps the vibe up on the site and still gives folks a place to discuss "explosive" issues.:)

Not if stated as such. Pajarito has made it very clear that he does not believe that gays should have some of the rights of straight people, which is an anti-gay stance, but he expresses his opinon in a civil manner. Likewise, it's not racist to state that most crimes committed in city X are committed by black people (although you might well get an argument on how that stat was arrived at.) Nor is it racist to criticize the NAACP, or affirmative action, or Jet magazine for something they did that you consider stupid.

However, calling someone a nigger, or a fag, or going after "all the fuckin homos", or posting "kill the towelheads" - that's hate speech, and will get deleted.

No problem, and I've been impressed by how civil most people have been, even on the more volatile threads.

I don't mean to pick nits here, but what if "I personally" think being called a fag, fuckin homo, ass jocky, etc. is no big deal? What if I think those are just words, have no power, and are not a personal attack? Can I be an exception to the rule or is that too much to ask of moderators?

You can not be a personal exception to the forum rules. Even if you want to allow personal attacks on yourself, those attacks will still effect the overall character of the forums. The rule against personal attacks sets a tone for the overall interaction on the DZ.com forums. It is not solely intended as a protection for individual users.

I've tried that before. Two posters were "just joking" and called each other fags, assholes etc. I deleted some posts, then relented when they claimed they had known each other for a long time, it was all in fun etc. I told them they could do it as long as they made it clear it was a joke i.e. put up smileys and whatnot.

Then I started getting lots of PM's about how offensive their conversation was. "How come they could get away with it but you edited my post? You're showing your obvious (left wing/skygod/clique) bias!" So I stopped letting people insult each other, even in fun. The problem with doing that is that it's a public forum, and inside jokes that include insults (or even real insults that don't bother you) are contrary to the intent of the posting rules here.

Bill

Is it ok if we insult each other in PM? That might work for the folks that feel the urge.

Sorry just joking couldn't resist:P

R.I.P.

How about insulting each other by 'omission'? There was a well known South African parliamentarian who declared during a session that half of the members were idiots (or sheep or asses). When the Speaker insisted on a point of order that he retracted the statement, he complied by stating that "Half of the members were not idiots.:P
