quade 4 #1 May 13, 2004 http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/05/12/congress.abuse/index.html While I understand the desire to not release any more photos -- don't we kinda have to? Otherwise, doesn't it look like we're trying to cover something up (isn't that actually the case)? This is just stupid. We're f'ed on this one either way.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Hazarrd 1 #2 May 13, 2004 This is unbelievable. This whole situation. As far as the update goes, I don't see any difference in showing them now or later. Like you said, either way we are screwed. I'd say they should release them now... .-.
Gawain 0 #3 May 13, 2004 At this point, I think it's pouring salt in the wound. If it were up to me, I wouldn't release any more photos until after the investigation, and subsequent trials are concluded. File them and allow availability under the Freedom of Information Act. ?? Like you say, we're f-ed either way. So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! Beerlight 0 #4 May 13, 2004 I say release them all. "And we aren't screwed." Some are embarassed yes, and a ramp up of terrorist violence will probably happen. However, this will just lead to further action/reaction by the coalition and hopefully provide better location info. Not the best scenario, but a plausible one. quade 4 #6 May 13, 2004 Quote While all this is completely disgusting and appalling, wasn't war 'easier' when the media wasn't involved...and didn't have instant ability to broadcast happenings across the globe with a touch of a button... The White House said essentially the same thing during the Vietnam war. However, "the media" being involved in wars probably preceded written words -- look at cave paintings. Look at the tapestries of the middle-ages. Look at the photographs of Mathew Brady. Listen to the radio broadcasts of Edward R. Murrow. Read Earnie Pyle. If the media's abundant presence makes it more difficult to wage war, I think that's a good thing. In -my- opinion, no country should ever be in the business of waging war. Defending itself -- absolutely. Waging war -- never. I believe the subtle distinction was the basis of the U.S. changing the title from "War Department" to "Department of Defense". All of that said, the press has been both used and abused in its unholy alliance with governments during war times. Certainly few people in the DoD complain when the press works -for- its purpose, but oh how they howl when unfortunate truths are brought to light. I believe that a free Fourth Estate is more important during war time than peace as it is the -only- way for us to show the world who we really are. Anything less is propaganda and encourages cover ups.quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver
Hazarrd 1 #7 May 13, 2004 The world would have never discovered the horrible truth of what was going on in Vietnam had it not been for the media. This was the first war broadcasted on TV where viewers could actually see the soliders in the midst of combat. This has made us all more aware of what is going on, and I think thats a good thing. .-. The Army tried to cover up the My Lai massacre. The whitewash report was written by Major Colin Powell. Fortunately there were enough honorable troops around for the truth to emerge. Despite that, a low level officer took the fall for it and he just got a slap on the wrist. This time they're already lining up enlisted soldiers to be the fall guys.... livendive 8 #14 May 13, 2004 Quote Give al-jazeera more fodder for their fair and balanced reporting Actually, al-jazeera hasn't been showing these pictures to nearly the extent the US media has. I can only assume it's for the same reason we are not showing the Nicholas Berg video...i.e. it's truly offensive. Given normal muslim dress, I guess I'll have to take them at their word that being shown naked is much more humiliating to them than it would be to me. I don't get it, but then I don't understand why many cultures eat the nasty-ass things they do either. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!"
