'The soldier and his will'

Recommended Posts

This one came to me in my email box the other day from my bro, Capt. Batt. Everytime I'm sitting in another hotel room fed up with a job I don't really care about anymore wondering if I can quit and still pay the mortgage on time, a picture like this show sup.

Then I have to stop and slap myself for acting like such pussy. Look at this guy. I have absolutely nothing to say that could do this justice, so I won't even try. I'll just let you all decide for yourself.

I attached the email text because I felt it was relevant to the forum topic.

<----->
This is an example of the small differences that certain leadership qualities make. Stories like this are all over the military, and that’s why everyone in uniform loves our President. You’ll never see it on the news, but “we” know about it and that’s why we follow HIM and not his orders.

Clinton would never have done something like this.

That’s the difference between claiming to be a leader and leading. One pays lip service while the other gets to work. This one really touched me, so I thought I would share. How many people would dare to motivate this soldier by challenging him to a run, of all things? That seems to be the President’s attitude – face the fear and beat it into a bloody pulp. He visits all Iraqi wounded at the Walter Reed Army Hospital once a month. Kind of says something when the most powerful man in the world clears his schedule to shake hands and say “Thank You”. Leadership I am still learning from.

<------->

Attached is a picture of Mike McNaughton. He stepped on a land mine in Afghanistan Christmas 2002. President Bush came to visit the wounded in the hospital. He told Mike that when he could run a mile, that they would go on a run together. True to his word, he called Mike every month or so to see how he was doing. Well, last week they went on the run, 1 mile with the president. Not something you'll see in the news, but seeing the president taking the time to say thank you to the wounded and to give hope to one of my best friends was one of the greatest/best things I have seen in my life. It almost sounds like a corny email chain letter, but God bless him.
Love,
Justin

Not something you'll see in the news, . . .

This -was- given wide coverage in the news -- yes, that liberal elite media covered this no doubt as part of their smear campaign on the President.

Just out of curiousity, what news outlets covered it and do you have any links to it? Or was it on evening network news?

I never saw this in the news and I try to pay attention too...

Either way, it's a good story.
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

A quick google comes up with . . .

http://www.wafb.com/Global/story.asp?S=1811041

http://www.snopes.com/politics/bush/jogging.asp

This Snopes link has verbiage similar to the email that was forwarded to dbattman by his brother and a couple of references to other places where the story was published.

Well, that's OK. I know that a LOT of folks don't see all the stuff in the news. I, like yourself, am kind of a news junky and I immediately recognised the photo from within the last month.

Alright, thanks for the links.

Thank you for also reminding me why I seldom post here and have grown to almost despise the internet. Let's take a post, pick out a fragment of a sentence, and JUMP ALL OVER IT!

We have hundreds of people on this forum who could make a great living editing 'letters to the editor' or soundbites for the evening news and radio.

Here we go . . .

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/040415/ids_photos_ts/r2592597040.jpg

Reuters, April 14, 2004.

I (freekishly) have a photographic memory for stuff like this.

Saddly, it's so freekin' difficult to find specific news photos on-line. Took me damn near (what?) 15 minutes?

No. You seem to have missed my point.

It has nothing to do with "jumping all over it". It has to do with trying to clear up this misconception some folks have around here (and also reflected in the original email) that the media would never report something like this.

They do. And even the largest GWB supporters miss it. It's not the fault of the media, but rather the flood of material that flashes by us every day. So, people see what they -want- to see and hear what they want to hear, but even at that . . . it's pretty hard to keep up with it all.

BTW, if you came into this forum expecting to post something and NOT have somebody (including me) comment about it . . . uh . . . do you understand what this forum is about?

I don't think it is a misconception, I think it is generally how the media picks and chooses what to put on TV and in the newspapers, etc. Stories such as this do tend to get little coverage because there isn't something sensational and horrifying about it. It is a heart-warming story that shows a strong individual rising to a challenge and meeting it...and as far as I am concerned being rewarded.

The media, IMO, in general has a liberal bias and particularly dislikes this administration, and so, few stories such as this surface.

I agree with this statement though...there is a large amount of material that comes out everyday and there is absolutely no way to cover every story, so uplifting and cheerful stories tend to be thrown by the wayside for more pressing issues or because they won't keep a viewers attention.

Point taken on this, though. It is indeed difficult with the barrage and cacaphony of multiple media all clamoring for you attention.

Kinda like that Monty Python but with the spam.
