Another example of Corporate Censorship

Recommended Posts

Hot on the heals of the Sinclair Broadcasting Group fiasco over the Nightline special wherein Ted Kopple read the names of those killed in Iraq, Disney is now moving to block the distribution of Michael Moore's latest film, "Fahrenheit 911" by its partner and -very- successful movie studio Miramax.

Story HERE.

Wow. Michael Moore...now that's a guy that knows exactly whats going wrong and how to fix it.

Hey maaannn.*puff from bong*...Moore's a dude of vision and light...he knows the way...*puff*...he'll lead us to enlightenment, so why don't you......uh...what were we talking about?:P:D:D
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Hey, I don't agree with everything he says or almost as importantly, how he says it, but . . . he does make -some- very interesting points everytime he makes a documentary, which is why he consistantly wins so many awards for them.

Take a look at the folks that give out those awards, the ones that decide the votes. If someone with not even a conservative view, but a more center then extreme left like M. Moore made a documentary of a similar subject matter, well, I'm sure they wouldn't be held in such a high honor.

Honestly, after reading one of his books, reading through another one of his books and watching his documentary ("bowling...") I am not impressed. Spewing from his head is sewage, raw untreated sewage.

That's an odd stance for me, since I do tend to read a lot and although I may not agree with someone's point of view, its rare for me to fully believe that someone is "full of shit."

XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX THU APRIL 22, 2004 10:25:37 ET XXXXX

DUDE, WHERE'S YOUR WEBSITE: MICHAEL MOORE OUT-SOURCING DESIGN, SERVER TO CANADA!

Advocate Michael Moore may have released a book titled DUDE, WHERE'S MY COUNTRY?, and may have vaulted to stardom documenting worker's rights and corporate malfeasance in Flint, Michigan, but that has not stopped Moore from outsourcing his website design and servers -- to companies based in Canada!

Cannes-bound Moore, the great protector of the U.S. working class, has outsourced the design of his Web site to a foreign company in Canada, records show.

PLANK -- based in Montréal, Québec -- is the development and design company behind MichaelMoore.com.

Meanwhile, Moore's site is hosted by a foreign owned company, Webcore Labs, of Calgary, Alberta Canada. [Webcore does maintain an office in Beverly Hills, CA.]

Moore did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

Moore is to get star billing at this year's Cannes Film Festival with the controversial FAHRENHEIT 9/11.

Then I look forward to him making a documentary.

So (okay I'm out of the loop) what was this other fiasco after the Nightline special, and is Disney blocking the distribution of Fahrenheit 911 because of fear of retribution? By whom? That's just bad juju...

Peace~

I disagree with your definition of "censorship."

"Blocking" distribution would mean: working to prevent the film from being distributed by anyone.

What Disney is doing here appears to be refusing to distribute the film itself.

If I refuse to speak your views I am not censoring you. You are still free to speak your own mind, on your own dime, at your own time. I'm just refusing to give you my time and money to do so.

Not paying for a view to be disseminated is completely different from censoring that view.

The film cannot be distributed by anyone else due to contractual obligations between Miramax and Disney. Thus a blockage from Disney prevents the film from being distributed at all.

It seems similar to the battle for Brazil, where Universal Studio's refusal to distribute the film effectively prevented it from being distributed for almost a year. There's also a lesson to be learned from that; due to all the publicity surrounding Terry Gilliam's (very public) fight with Sidney Sheinberg over the film, it was paid a lot of attention to by critics, and its controversy made it more popular than it would have been otherwise.

And this is a scenario that I believe Mr. Moore would try to set up for any of his work. And Disney would go along with it. (For publicity and $$$).

This conspiracy would be doable, unlike some of the far fetched ones I've seen discussed elsewhere.

I agree with you. I too dont agree with everything he says or how he says it, but at least he has the courage to bring these issues up. They're not warm and nice issues that make you say "gee what a wonderful world we live in and everything is nice and warm and great and everyone is perfect and corporations look out for the little guy and theyre ethical and we can trust em cuz gee theyre responsible and ethical and the execs would never ever EVER be blinded by greed (cough cough Enron)" but issues that make you say "damn so this is what happens when a company moves operations over seas. Or geez some of those execs are greedy little pricks (I'm not anti corporations, but 10+K for a shower curtain, 40+million for a birthday party)" His film "Rogerl and Me" was viewed by my senior level business class to look at the social and economical impact of a company moving over seas for cheap labor (dont want to debate this). FYI my prof's friend shows this same video at Harvard Business School to address the same topic. He touches on topics that most people dont want to or would rather not address.

Do you even understand what the word label "documentary" means?

It -might- rise to the level of journalism, but it doesn't have to and it doesn't mean it it can't be biased. In fact, some of the greatest documentaries of all time have had considerable bias.

However, it simply means it's a work of non-fiction.
